Do I need notarized copies of my latest federal income tax return. Where would I get something like that? I know how to get my tax papers for the last several years....but to get notarized copies?

You can stand me at the gates of hell, but I wont back down.

And then too....What do you do about the ex husband being on a couple of the past tax returns as joint filer... As in 2008 and 2007.....2009 is all me. Suppose have three years of tax returns?

Three years of tax returns is a good idea. If you have the tax transcripts or if you have a copy of your returns with w-2's, the ex's income can be separated by yours.

You don't need a notorized copy.

The latest tax return is all that is required for the Embassy (I-134) and AOS (I-864). If you've got good evidence of current income and you're not borderline on the poverty level, I think one return is sufficient.

Personally, I provided two older transcripts and a TurboTax copy of the latest return (I signed it BTW.) My fiance/husband got all flustered with the lady at Window 1 because he couldn't hear her. So he just stuffed the whole financial folder to her under the glass and said "take what you need because I don't know what your asking me". She looked through and picked out only the latest tax return and only 1 of 2 letters showing regular income payments I receive. They weren't from an employer but served the same purpose since they were continuing income. She also didn't take a statement showing some investments. I was there at the interview so I know what she handed back to him. So the interviewer guy never saw more than the form I-134, one tax return with W-2, and one letter of income.

I just wanted to share an experience with you if you don't want to try to separate out ex-husband's income from older tax returns, as they aren't really required.
