I'm wondering if it is worth getting an attorney for a CR1?

The CR1 process seems relatively straightforward as opposed to adjusting status from say an F1.

Most VJ filers would agree that unless you have a complicated case you can navigate the process easily on your own. Some have even found that their lawyers slowed down their process. Read the guides on VJ, follow others' experiences and you should be fine. This process is expensive enough as it is! Good luck.

If you can read the guides here and follow directions on the forms then there is no need unless there is something problematic about your case.

I filed my I-130 for Wife & Step-son April 20th 2009 and they landed in Chicago on Nov 25th 2009!

Our attorney set us back 1 month and $1,000.

If you can read, and follow directions, in my opinion, you're more qualified than my attorney was...

We fired the attorney and are going through NVC on our own without any problems.

Mixed reactions about this. I personally would recommend a GOOD attorney. I hired an attorney, she was a b.i.t.c.h. i screened everything she did. She's #######. But I would still recommend one.

Best of Luck. Best wishes. Thank you.

HaHa thats pretty funny, as most other filers that have hired an attorney find, we filed on our own, if you can read, you can do this, my friend hired an attorney for a K-1 straight forward over 60K income, got 3 RFE's attorney misdirected them on SS# application, did not know proper AOS charged them 1500 to process and another 1500 for AOS

If you have a money tree in your back yard, by all means share it with someone you don't know so they can pay off thier tuition loan

If not take an hour read the process and file the petition yourself

We're on a K1,but as for me and my fiancee experienced hiring an attorney, its totally a #######!1st,She said we should file K2 for our daughter so we did together with the K1 application, but just this jan.i found out about VJ by researching so many questions i have and learn that our daughter is eligible to apply for a US Passport and get CRBA.2nd,We passed every document to her and tell us she double or triple check everything before passing it to USCIS..My fiance received NOA2 dec. 17,that means our paper will be in NVC soon but... jan 8 another letter stating that NVC sent back our petition to USCIS for Review.Isn't that too depressing? We waited for 3 months another delay only to know its just an idiot mistake..that if that attorney that we hired double check it will be a lot faster..For me,NO for an attorney...But your the only one who will decide for that,if you think you can find a good one and you have a lot of $$$$,why not!

I'll suggest a coupla things, maybe (maybe...) help you to decide whether you need an attorney or not.

1. read the VJ guides. map the steps out on paper and pencil. See if anything doesn't make sense to you.

2. Read the USCIS web portal about the forms. Map out the steps on paper and pencil. See if anything doesn't make sense to you.

3. Practice filling out the forms, at least 5 times. See if anything still doesn't make sense to you.

4. Have any red flags? Practice writing up attestation letters about each red flag.

Now, after doing (with major emphasis on DOING ) all of the above, if you do NOT understand the forms and the process and potential red flags for your petition,

then I'd suggest getting a good lawyer.

Are you asking on yer own behalf? Your timeline is VERY confusing.

fwiw, an F1 filing in USA would file the I-130, I-485, plus a slew of other documents. People do that, without an attorney, you betcha.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

No, you can do it by yourself. Just read the instructions. You can ask help here if you were confused. help here are very helpful and friendly.

Ditto. . . except it was 3+ months and we are considering the firing of our attorney while starting NVC.

. . . Some have even found that their lawyers slowed down their process. . .

We can't accept any more risk of this happening.

I've kept up on everything using the VJ community through our second case now.

Darnell sums it up I think. If you're on it, you can do it.
