Uhaul and other moving suggestions

Based on my recent experience with titling and registering my car in the U.S. (i.e.: yesterday in Virginia), you might want to fill out an HS-7 form too -- Declaration of Importation. It's not needed at the border, but it was asked for at the DMV in my state.

As for U-Haul and/or moving options...have you considered DRIVING the car and renting a small trailer to hitch to the back of it? It would be much cheaper. Edmonton to Colorado isn't THAT far of a drive, either. If money is the main concern, I would suggest looking into that.

I had all my import forms ready and in my inbox until a power outage eliminated all my inbox and many many hours of rearch, links and emails......oh ya I was happy about that.

Where do you get the HS 7 form? And do you fill it out after your cross over or before? Also did you complete forms there or just have your compliance letter etc and customs did the rest?

U haul prices will vary, I dont believe its the distances that matters so much, but more so the destinations.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

i have a uhaul 17ft truck booked for approx april 30 (if all goes well april 22 in montreal)

not towing vehicle as i brought that to texas at christmas time

uhaul gave me a price of 1500.00 for 6 days 2600 miles.

plus gas

winnipeg mb to tyler texas

this was the cheapest way i could find

Did you import the vehicle at Xmas? If so how? If not then you may have a big problem trying to register it in the US without the paperwork at customs etc. You 're saying if your April 22nd interview in Montreal goes well - that's for the CR1.

Has anyone looked into renting large truck/SUV type vehicles from car rental companies? I am thinking of going this route as I don't have any furniture or bigger items and have looked into Budget/Enterprise companies for rentals. So far it seems some will not let you drive from one location to another? We are thinking of renting near the border for example in Buffalo, New York driving up to Ottawa then going back to US and driving down to California... thought it would be cheaper then renting in Canada and crossing over into US. Just not having luck with companies online quotes regarding this.....

Yes it seems car rental companies don't allow crossing the border, but outfits like U Haul don't seem to mind.

Maybe it's an insurance issue...?

for what its worth here is the breakdown for my rental of a 14' uhaul truck going from pickering, ontario to mount vernon, ohio, now keep in mind she told me that i would get a discounted rate because they needed trucks of this size in that region, almost as if i was doing uhual a favor by driving it 1 way.

Auto Transport $29.25

Furniture Pads $10.00

14' Moving Van $386.40

The rate includes 3 day(s) and 791 kilometers

Good information here.. However, I have another question - does anyone know if Penske and/or Uhaul will allow you to rent the truck in the U.S., drive into Canada to pack it up, and then drive back to the U.S.? I was told you could but was wondering if anyone here as done it. Budget trucks do not allow you to cross the border (according to their website). I think it has to do with the insurance but it would be nice to know if anyone else has been able to do this.

Approx. $1,500 to rent a 17' Uhaul from Buffalo, NY to Denver, CO but ~$2,000 to rent in Ontario, right across the border.. (includes insurance). So I'm trying to save 25% by renting in NY instead of Ontario.

Thanks!

We did the ABF u-pack and it cost us about 2 grand from Toronto, Ontario area to Tampa, Fl and we flew down, didn't bring a vehicle. I guess it depends on how much stuff you really need to bring. I managed to get rid of alot of stuff before we left but with 3 kids there is only so much stuff you can get rid of.

Thanks for the reply! I did a quote at ABF U-pack from Hamilton, Ontario to Denver, FL and it's at $2,400! So even with gas, etc. Uhaul would be less.

One of the factors that determines U-Haul rates is how short the destination area is on equipment. If you are moving to an area that is currently short on the equipment you are renting then they discount the price to motivate you to rent with them.

Another thing to know, if you have State Farm Auto Insurance they do cover rental equipment you drive (including U-Haul moving trucks) so you can pass on the insurance (they call it Damage Waiver I believe).

Good to know - I'm not sure if I'm in an area that is short on equipment but I will watch the quotes over the next few days, then I'll have to lock in one something. I have Farmers Insurance - not sure what their coverage is for rental trucks, will have to call.

Thanks!
