Okay, so we are looking at trailers/trucks now for the move down to most likely take place in late April. We have our interview 4/15 and so are getting the truck rented to haul the wifes car and goods down.

So far, every place we have checked is a minimum of $2000 to go from Edmonton to Denver, Colorado. That seems outrageous to me that to rent a small truck and a trailer to pull the car costs that much! When I moved my stuff from Denver to Los Angeles a few years ago a Uhaul was onlyl $350 and then I had to pay for the gas of course, but 2 grand?? I feel like we could buy a small truck for that much and then sell it when we get here. Curious what other people did and if you found a cheaper alternative?

Also, on another note just to confirm that to bring the car over, all we needed was the letter from the manufacturer stating that it was suitable for the US correct? I forget the term, but we did obtain the letter from the car manufacturer, but that's all we needed right?

thanks again for all your help everyone!

You will need the compliance letter which speaks to emisson controls etc and may include information about any recent recall information. I'm considering the U Haul route when I'm ready and I guess I'll be adding a trailor to this. I'd be going from BC to Arizona with that rig...I think U Haul had told me about $1000 then of course gas etc. What trucking companies have you called?

Maybe you'll get a cheaper rate if you rent it IN DENVER at a place that has no 'per mile' rates, then drive it back?

Also - consider making 2 trips - one for her car, then one just for the household stuff.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Based on my recent experience with titling and registering my car in the U.S. (i.e.: yesterday in Virginia), you might want to fill out an HS-7 form too -- Declaration of Importation. It's not needed at the border, but it was asked for at the DMV in my state.

As for U-Haul and/or moving options...have you considered DRIVING the car and renting a small trailer to hitch to the back of it? It would be much cheaper. Edmonton to Colorado isn't THAT far of a drive, either. If money is the main concern, I would suggest looking into that.

We didn't have a car to pull, but we rented a Uhaul truck and drove it from Southern ON to Virginia (about 500 + miles) and it cost us $550-650 (sorry don;t remember exactly) plus gas...in the end probably about $800 in total to move an etire latge 2 bedroom apartment which contained a lot of stuff! That actually sounds about right. I moved from Southern Ontario to Denver this past summer and all the quotes we got from U haul were in the $2,000+ range. We opted to just downsize- put all the stuff I really really want/needed in the car and drove it down. It was actually the best decision for me.

Good luck on everything! Enjoying this weather?

Might be cheaper for you to just drive down and instead of using UHaul rent a relocube or part of a truck trailer from ABF Upack. You can do a quote online and compare costs.

Yeah, Uhaul isn't exactly cost-effective for cross-country moves. A Uhaul from Edmonton to Salt Lake City is $1700, plus gas ... so only a little less than from Edmonton to Denver and Denver is a heck of a lot farther! I doubt I would feel comfortable driving a Uhaul van anyway, so we decided to avoid Uhaul altogether and are doing the ABF Upack route. It's going to cost us $810 for 8 feet of trailer space and this way we can just drive my car down and not have to have it towed. The downside is that my stuff won't be there right away, but I'm not too fussed ... I would rather be without my stuff for a day or two than pay almost $1000 more just to have it there a little bit sooner.

Thanks for all the responses. I think the trailer may be the way to go. I just check the ABF site and called to get a quote and for 6 linear feet it costs $1750 from Edmonton to Denver or $1850 for 8 linear feet, so we are back near the 2 grand range going that way. Not sure why it's only $850 to salt lake from Edmonton when Denver isn't that much further. Renting a Uhaul here and taking it all the way there is just as much as it's by the mile and I can't find a place locally that does "no mileage". At .79/mile, and 1,400 miles each way, I'm back to exactly $2,000. Thanks again, time to downsize.....

Hmm, I just did a quote online for them, from Edmonton to Denver, it came out to $1449.00 - I would say the person on the phone gave you a high quote. That price does include all fees and taxes btw. One other thing to know is that ABF quotes in U.S. dollars - not really a big deal since the Canadian dollar is quite strong at the moment.

Now, they may not have quoted incorrectly, however there are peak days and low days, they may have quoted you a peak day, not sure what date you gave them. For instance if you get delivery of the trailer on the 21st of April, that is a low day, but if you get delivery on the 30th, that is a high day. You can see which is which by looking at the colour coded dates beside the 'moving date' in the online quote form.

Now, just because you get the relocube or trailer on the 21st, doesn't mean you have to leave that day. You have 3 days to pack it, so that would take you right through the weekend (they don't pick up on weekends) and you could have them pick it up on Monday the 26th, but still be charged for the lower rate delivery date.

I guess the other consideration is that with Upack you aren't paying for the gas for the truck - so at least a little bit of a saving there as well!

Oh one other thing, when they emailed me this quote they also gave the relocube price, which is even cheaper, although it says terminal to door - so maybe they don't do door to door in Edmonton - worth checking out - a relocube will hold just as much as 6 feet of truck trailer space:

ReloCube® OptionsMove

1 ReloCube

Terminal-to-door delivery $1191

Mine was the same about 800 with gas from Southern Ontario to Southern VA. I got 500 miles free, maybe U-Haul isn't doing that anymore. I did call around to a lot of companies, (not ABF though) and it was so much more expensive for everyone else because they didn't do 1 way. Good luck, hope you do find something cheaper. What about her driving her car and not hauling it, does that make much of a difference.

We have a 26 ft U haul reserved for 5 or 6 days for $700.00 to go 1 way from Abbotsford BC to Sacramento CA. also for $39.00 a little auto transport dolly to tow my fiances car behind the U haul truck.

It's about 900 miles one way. I obtained the quote way last winter and maybe the prices like rental cars are based on seasonal demand and can change on a daily basis.

U Haul has maintained the quote even though we keep moving the date up due to waiting on the USCIS.
