The ironic part of the healtcare bill is that health insurance premiums will actually increase for the vast majority of Americns and along with increased health care costs come a hike in income tax...

Didn't Mr. Obama say no tax increase for those making less than $250,000?

While insurance companies will now have to accept those with pre-existing conditions, what will happen when some of these insurance companies go out of business due to the exponentially increased insurance coverage payments for those people? Hmmm - with less insurance companies around and even less competition, I wonder if premiums will increase.............

Deficit:

• Would reduce the deficit by $143 billion over the first ten years. That is an updated CBO estimate. Their first preliminary estimate said it would reduce the deficit by $130 billion over ten years. Would reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion dollars in the second ten years.

Paying for the Plan:

• Medicare Payroll tax on investment income -- Starting in 2012, the Medicare Payroll Tax will be expanded to include unearned income. That will be a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for families making more than $250,000 per year ($200,000 for individuals).
• Excise Tax -- Beginning in 2018, insurance companies will pay a 40 percent excise tax on so-called "Cadillac" high-end insurance plans worth over $27,500 for families ($10,200 for individuals). Dental and vision plans are exempt and will not be counted in the total cost of a family's plan.
• Tanning Tax -- 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning services.

There are 5 cost containing provisions in the bill - one being prudent purchasing.

Prudent purchasing means that insurers can't enter, or stay, in the exchanges unless regulators are satisfied that they're doing a good job. That works both to ensure a good product, but also to hold costs down. If an insurer wants to hike premiums, for instance, they have to submit a justification to the exchanges and post that justification publicly on their Web site. If the exchange isn't convinced, that insurer can be dropped from the exchange, losing all customers and profits they were making.

Do this to one or two insurers, one or two times, and the message will be pretty strong. Moreover, it will go a ways towards countering the status quo bias that current infects insurance purchasing, wherein people don't change because, well, it's a pain to change insurers, and so insurers aren't forced to provide products as good as a competitive market would ordinarily demand. It also gives regulators a way to tamp down destructive marketing (an insurer can be dropped for using their marketing to try and cherrypick healthy customers -- say, by advertising exclusively in Runner's Monthly) and seed quality reforms.

There are 5 cost containing provisions in the bill - one being prudent purchasing.

The 242 Billion dollar doctor fix that was eliminated from the bill alone will blow any hope of deficit reduction in the bill. Only in Washington can you spend 982 Billion dollars, increase Revenues by 462 Billion dollars, and claim a 132 Billion dollar savings.

It's a $695 fine and if your income is between 100 to 400 percent of the poverty level, you will receive a subsidy on your premiums. No one will not be able to afford health insurance under this bill. The ones just above 400 percent poverty level whose employers aren't offering them health insurance are the ones that will have to sacrifice the most, but hopefully, the incentive for employers to provide health insurance will keep that percentage low.

Well considering people don't know what is in this bill its no wonder that people think they just got a Christmas present. We'll see what the polling data is once they find out about the penalties involved for non-compliance. I agree that all people should have the availablity of affording the healthcare coverage that they need/want but I also think it should be my right not to pay for something I will not use for a very long time. BTW, don't you know that amnesty for illegals is next? Dont you think theyll want their free health care too? This should be of particular insult to all of us on this website that jumped through the gauntlet to obtain legal immigration status. A health savings account would create all the stash I need for my old age. All of this is a polictical gradstanding effort and it goes hand in hand with Obama's apology tour to the world for the evils that America has inflicted simply for being the greatest country ANY god, OR gods, have ever given man, and this is coming from a practicing pagan. The system does need to be fixed, insurance companies alla AIG do need a smack down of sorts but this bill, and the coming bills to follow aim to destroy them completely just as Obama, Pelosi, and Reid aim to destroy the private sector, destroy capitalism, and destroy America. We were warned about how much these people, and Obama in particular hate this country, but why these warnings were ignored by so called centrists and independants is beyond me. Bill Maher tried to reassure us that Obama is not a socialist, and that he wasnt even a lib, and I just have to respond "ARE YOU BRAIN DAMAGED?" point to 1, just 1, entitlement program in America that was sucessful at containing costs and did not grow the deficit. What makes you think this program will be any different? It is all a lie, single payor is coming soon.
