Here's what I put in the STUPID RFE THREAD:

My (husband's) stupid RFEs:

1. Question DS230 Question 30, Most recent address he wrote "present" MUST INCLUDE START DATE-PRESENT

2. Birth Certificate original is considered a civil copy since we obtained it from Italy. (Husband born to Italian parents in Libya).

3. Police certificate missing from Maldives (though he listed other countries for over 6 mo.) We only included Italy b/c this is the only country since 16 of which he has been resident.

What I learned:

1. Don't let your husband fill out paperwork.

2. Get the copy from the country of birth only (... and international backgrounds while attractive can make this process take too long).

3. The US is more concerned about certain countries.

After sitting down and going through all the places my husband has lived, it turns out he wasn't even in the Maldives for more than 6 months - he was just "rounding" So since #30 is already RFE I'm going to type out a letter of explanation along with all the places b/c they will not fit on the form!!!! AGGGGHHHH!

Wow that totally blows, especially for the 1st question is just plain assinine! but the important thing is that you have a path forward and a fix to this. Can you get the birth cert w/o too much of a hassle? what about the PCC? my concern is that you're dealing with 3rd world countries where getting things like birth certs are the biggest pain in the asses to get (i oughta know; my wife went thru hell getting hers from a pretty small city in south India). If he was born in Libya, then you're talking about dealing with old-school antiquated systems (hint - if you already dont know this, money talks in these places - you're probably gonna have to bribe big time to get what you want). same goes for the Maldives...i truly wish you the best of luck  ; i think some of these things may require personal attention and you may have to go in person to get these docs...

I just have to put this out there, but seems like RFEs also depend on the NVC officer that reviews your case. I gotta tell you how lucky I think I am and why God is so great - my wife's birth cert (which she went thru hell getting) had her full maiden name, but chek this out - only her mom and dad's 1st names! when she asked the idiot chode who typed out the cert to put her parents full names (ie first AND friggin last names!), he flatly refused (this after already having been bribed and after 4 days of running my wife around in 110 degree humid south Indian weather)...needless to say, i was freaking out about if this would flag an RFE...

now if that werent enough, the other blithering idiots at the passport office jumbled her dad's name around ie instead of first middle last, they have it as middle last first! when she went to the passport office to get it changed, the response was "madam, it is all ok. in india, this is how we put the name." (??!?!!?! whaaaatTF!?!). now the kicker to this is that when her passport record comes up online, her dad's name is listed in the correct order! and to compound this, it would be one thing if her mom's name was also jumbled (ie consistency in screw up), but NO! her mom's name was listed in the right order...

so basically it was a printing error, and to mitigate this, i included a note in the ds-230 application saying that many times in India, people names are often written as middle last first when addressing formally (that actually is true, especially in South India) ie if your name is John Jay Smith, then you could be addressed as J.S.John (yup totally f*****d up, but that's what it is).

So certainly something that i was also freaking oout about recieving an RFE about...(to add to the birth cert fiasco)...

FORTUNATELY, i didnt! i think the note i left helped and how i think it didnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that many parts of the world have different formats of issuing birth certs. whatever the reason, I THANK GOD profusely over and over and will do so till my last breath!

LOL! Tell me about it!! We already called Italian embassy in Tripoli and it was some lady's cell number - she said she thinks all the docs from 1979 were destroyed in a bombing - if that's the case, I guess we'll get a letter saying that?!! And Maldives - turns out he wasn't there for 6 months straight, he was just rounding up?!!! We're off to get his old passport to prove this and grossly amend question #30. All I can say is at least we're together!!! :) :) :) (and thank god the Italian system is easier) I'm already in all the systems here!!!!

And I guess if we have to go in person we could call it a vacation? Tripoli or bust!!!

Ok goodmorning to all.Is today my day... Come on NVC..I will call later tonite

if i dont get email.

Sassy, word of advice - is there any way you could attend the interview in person? reason I mention is it b/c my old college roomate worked as a consulate officer in the american embassy in Guyana for 2 years and he used to do visa interviews (he's back in the states now). he used to tell me loads of fraud stories and the one thing he's been telling me over and over is that attending the interview along with your spouse lends a ton of credibility to proving a legit relationship, even though you could be married for years. (ironically, he himself applied for a K1 fiance visa for his japanese fiance and is awaiting her interview in Tokyo, which good for him, got approved...)

anyway, just my 2 cents and hope this helps...

YES! being together is what that counts; doesnt matter if you're a USC or Italian! that is my dream - to one day live in Sorrento or Capri. I loved Tuscany too (San Gimingnano is amazing!)...heck I would stay in Italy if I were you (think A Good Year, except in Italy!) B-)
