Hello,

I am new to this forum and I have been trying to find out for some time now how the name change works. I understand that a federal judge will handle the name change. How exactly does it work. Also does anyone know if the Denver office gives us the option to take the oath of allegiance on the same day as the testing and interview? Any answers and feedback would be appreciated.

There were a number of posts of people who requested name change during their N400. Most of them had to have court oath administered because of this. I tried searching on VJ and while some posts do list, when I click on them I am taken back to the home page of VJ. Let me notify the mods of this and see how we can get you some more information.

Amarilys,

Once your naturalization is approved by the USCIS, they handle the name change petition and file that with the federal court administering the oath. The court considers the application for name change, approves/disapproves it and issues the order for name change prior to oath.

When you say "once your naturalization is approved", I am assuming you mean, once I successfully pass the civics and English test. Do you know how long it takes from the time you pass the test until you get your name changed, and the oath ceremony date? Thanks in advance for your answer.

After you pass your civics, English, etc. tests, and your IO determines that you qualify for naturalization, the IO turns your application over for final approval, usually to a supervisory IO. The length of time it takes for a name change will vary internally between district offices and I am not familiar with Denver. There will also be some variance between judges as some have busier calendars than others. Some take a few weeks, some several months, longer than non-name change cases. I haven't seen anyone from Denver report their timeline with a name change so I can't be more specific.

Hello All,

Just an updtate to let you know that I have received a letter stating that I need to go down to the federal court in Denver to handle my oath ceremony. So this is the end of the immigration road for me. Good luck to all of you out there who still have immigration stuff to be taken care of.
