My son-in-law has had his work authorization card for 2 months now. He has been looking for a job but no luck. He is 24 and has no work experience at all (has been a college student in Egypt but no degree). As he is a devout muslim, he won't consider anything haram such as food service (pork & alcohol) or banking/finance jobs. Does anyone have any suggestions for first jobs in America?

At 24 without a degree, he should perhaps be looking at retail of some type. You don't mention his english language skills or what he did go to school, but even without a degree he may be able to look for work in that field. University experience is always a plus. What are his interests? That's always the best way to find a job.

Perhaps a certified nurses aide in a hospital or nursing home facility? My husband came to the US with no degree either and is a devoted muslim also. He was accepted in to a nurses aide training program thru our local vocational school where he obtained his certified nurses aide certificate. After submitting his application to one of the local nursing homes in our area he was hired within 2 days and has been working in this field for almost 2 years. I know alot of the nursing home facilities in our area offer free training classes and will hire after completion of the program and passing the test. They are especially looking for men as there is alot of lifting involved. My husband needs to complete his GED and then he would either like to go into nursing or physical therapy. It's a start....

Best wishes :star:

Certified Nursing Assistant is a good idea.

It is fairly easy to find a job in this economy even you are fresh out of a NA school and newly certified.

Preschool teacher/day care teacher can be an option for him as well since it doesn't require a certification or license.

You just need to be a high school graduate or have GED.

Get him to apply for factory work, have him search the online job sites for "assembly" or "assemblers".

It may not be permanent work but it will start to build up his resume nicely and who knows he may build a career from it.

I'd suggest having him talk with the imam at the local mosque. That man is 'well-connected', knows all in the area. Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Is this true?

Yes, at least for the counties I have lived.

You need a license to be a kindergarten teacher, but not for preschool/daycare.

You need a license to be a kindergarten teacher, but not for preschool/daycare.

It depends on the city and state for preeschool/daycare. In Miami, you do need a certification, including CPR. YOu have to go to college and have a certificate of 40 hours. My mom did it and my sister in law did it and she's a teacher's aid. And then you have to continue classes to keep yourself current.

I think it's a good thing, especially CPR, if a child has an accident, one knows what to do to save a life.
