if I don't get my GC and SSN? Do I need the GC to get the SSN? What a mess this is turning out to be. Every place I call, no one know the answer to my questions. I called USCIS, some guy had no idea if my GC was produced or anything. I called SSN office and no one knew what I was talking about and my name is no where in any system.

Good GRIEF!!! My husband works at a very important job and can't just take day after day off running around after stuff. we run the real risk of going to one office and being refused because we don't have the card or document from the other office.

WTH?

I've about had it with this. Things were NOT this hard in Canada for me ever. not to mention I could get around myself and take care of my own business without having to rely on someone to take care of me and do t hings for me.

Sucks so bad.

Ugh...

Sorry all, I am just so freaking bummed and tired of waiting -- I know you all have waited/are waiting too -- it's not just me but I think I am just plain out of patience.

Sorry for being the HUGEST downer of life but I am NOT feeling the joy. My husband thinks I need to just chill out -- he's right but he can drive and has a job so nyah!

Anyway. Sorry for the p1ssy post. Like I said to Nev, I should really be embarrassed about how sorry I am feeling for myself right now but I am too annoyed to even care about what an whiner i look like.

awww lgg!! I think we all have the right to whine and complain every now and then! There's no need to apologize to anyone for anything.

They normally tell people to expect the card in and around 30 days after approval. A lot of people get it sooner, but there are also a lot of people who don't. So, if you crossed February 26th and the POE was slow in recording your information, it may have taken a week or more for your card production to be ordered. They may have not forgot about you! Maybe they're just being slow.

When you crossed did you get that stamp in your passport that acts as a temp GC? Because I do believe that would be enough to get your SSN. I know for K-1's they except your I-94 and some form of photo ID (like your passport).

the SSN is easy, straightforward to get, at a SSA office, but - you must go in person.

I have to assume yer husband can DROP YOU OFF before his work time, at the SSA office, and then pick you up at a shopping mall, with enough cash in hand to hire taxi to take you from SSA office to the mall.

GO IN PERSON -

tell the clerk to look you up in the SAVE database.

If any problem, if clerk mumbles about 'USCIS or DHS verification' - somethings wrong - the SAVE database has not been updated with yer information yet. If no problem , though...

GO IN PERSON 2 days later, clerk will give you the number. The card will arrive 5 to 15 days later in the mail.

as to 'green card' - well, you have one, already, of sorts - it's that stamp in yer passport that you got at POE - it turns the VISA stamp into a temporary I-551 card (green card). You don't need the physical green card (plastic card thingie) to apply for a SSN at SSA office - you already have the right stuff in yer passport. OH - and FWIW - there is 'no other office paperwork' to 'run around and lose' - you already have everything you need to show up at the SSA office and apply for SSN.

I'm an important person too - (and not to be snarky) but if I did not have to the time to take off to take my wife, I'd make sure one of my assistants took care of my wife for the trip to the SSA office. PERHAPS your husband can do the same, ah? If not - he should be able to HIRE a personal assistant to take you around for half a day, for less than 150 bucks.

I don't know what's funnier asking her to have her husband hire someone to drive her around or picturing lgg in a shopping mall...

I think its all beside the point, she was merely venting as we all have at some point in this process. It really does try every single ounce of our patience.

One can NOT phone and get any info about the SSN! one has to goto the office. Wait at least 10-14 BUSINESS days, then follow the steps I provided in an earlier post. Usually the green card takes 4-6 weeks. There was a time last yr where it was taking longer. And yes some do get it faster, all depends how fast that POE sent away your stuff.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
