And how many religions do you know of that stone their women to death for being brutally raped?

It's amazing how people confuse culture with religion. Many people outside of the US could say the same thing about Christianity and the US when it comes to capital punishment. Please quote the Quran or sharia law or SOMETHING that backs up your quote before espousing your ignorance for all to see.

Fair do's. At least we now have a reasonable talking point related the specific tenets of the religion.

That said, this is arguably little different from the type of material that features in the Old Testament for example, the only difference here is whether or not the people who take part in this sort of activity in arab countries do so out of a geniune set of spirtual beliefs, or are just going through the motions ritualistically.

It was my understanding, for example, that the New Testament supercedes much of the Old, yet you still see many self-professed Christians trotting out with rhetoric and opinions (and even acting in a manner) representative of the Old Testament. Which is why I say that christianity as it is practiced by a good many people, is not christianity at all - but rather a corrupted version of Old Testament Judaism.

I'm still of the opinion that the reasons that middle-eastern countries have poor human rights records lies predominantly in the history of the region, as well as social and cultural factors. Religion only comes into it in the most superficial way. How else do you account for the millions of peaceful law abiding muslims around the world?

All I know is that a religion started by a man who was all about hatred and bloodshed simply canNOT be good. What do you expect his followers to be like? He told believers to hate non-muslims and, call me crazy, I'm guessing that's where the problems started. The fanatical muslims that people are always claiming "aren't following the religion" are actually doing JUST that - they're doing exactly what their prophet did and told them to do.

I actually wonder if those "millions of peaceful law abiding muslims" you mentinoed are the ones that AREN'T following the religion. Those are the ones that would probably leave islam if they could/dared.

Arab high culture was hijacked in the middle ages by the Mamluks - before that it was the birthplace of mathematics and early science. In many ways Europe was far more barbaric back then.

So are you saying the prophet that started islam wasn't violent and didn't promote bloodshed of those that were non-believers? Read up on the history of Mohammed.

Also, as far as Europe being more barbaric - I don't know what that has to do with anything. "Europe" isn't a religion.

No I'm not saying that - just that christian Europe was a barbaric place during the dark/middle ages. After the fall of Rome, the middle-east was a cultural center, at least it was until the Mamluk revolution. That and the mongols set civilisation (in general) back quite a few years.

As for Mohammed, I know he was a warrior. Aside from that I said I don't know all that much else about him or Islam. That said, it seems to me to be reasonable to admit that, rather than do what a lot of people are doing - relying on second-hand assumptions that may have little basis in fact.

In fact I do. When seeking to apply his sunnah to my life, I try to take into account ALL of it, not simply picking out the pieces that look sensationally bloody on a message board. When I read his entire life, I find balance and solutions to everday situations and issues. One of the reasons I am a muslim (converted in college, prior to meeting my husband) is because I admired the Prophet (saws) when I read about his life.

At least from my perspective, it's when we err to any one side, emphasizing one aspect of the sunnah over another that we get terrorism and extremism. If we only focus on the wars the Prophet (saws) fought without also studying and applying his mercy and the limits and rules of war, you get those who have a ruthless disregard for innocent human life. That isn't fully applying the sunnah.

That's exactly why I am not Christian or Jewish, either.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Would you dare to say that the million law abiding US Muslims that live in a "free" society are not practicing correctly and cannot leave Islam? Please enlighten me so I can tell my husband to give it up.

I did. I meant specifically your comment to "stone women to death for being brutally raped". Does one consider rape and adultery the same thing?

The religion is so brutal that they probably consider rape to be adultery.
