Does anyone know how long it takes for a CR1's SSN to arrive?

We checked the box at interview, which was approved on March 3rd. I'm "expecting" it this week but I'm actually surprised it hasn't come this past week.

Is there a phone number I can call to pester the SSA at?

There is a SSA office right near me but I don't have time to really leave work and go there...

thanks.

Many times it does NOT come! After 10-14 BUSINESS days after ur POE, head down to ur local SSN office with a ALREADY FILLED OUT form and ask the status of ur SSN! They may say, nope, never been applied for--then hand them ur already filled out form and ur passport/visa for proof of ID and that meet the criteria for a SSN. The SSN office can be a popular place---So best to get there before it opens. I went this route back in 2005, 1 week later SSN arrived in mail

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html

No use going to the SSN office right away after your POE as your paperwork wont have been filed!! Thats why one should wait 10--14 business days

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Mike777-I don't know about the CR1s..But I do know that the SSA can take forever!

You might have to go to the SSA office itself to get this sorted out...(the 1-800 # will do no good here..)

For example, my first SSN took up to 8 weeks to arrive

Due to "immigration verification"...(lol..either that, or they forgot all about me...lol..)

(see my vj timeline for more info...)

And that was after I bugged them in-person about it...lol....

So yes, I recommened you do the same thing too....

Go to the SSA office..and bring all your documents too..

(btw...they want to see the green card itself, not the I-551 stamp..)

Hope this helps. Good luck. Hope you get your SSN card soon too.

Talking on the phone is useless.

Go In Person.

If 'getting off from work' is troublesome -

send the foreign spouse, instead.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I agree with Darnell. I called the 1-800 number and talked to a woman who gave me wrong information... so just go to your office and talk to someone face to face who may actually know what they are doing!

Finally married... and still married... ;)

As stated above, one has to wait approx 10-14 BUSINESS days AFTER you enter the USA! Events just don't hsappen right away, its not liek as son as ugive them the brown envelope they ar emadly workign away on it! They have to send it off to the proper destinations, it takes awhile, thus the reason why one has to wait a bit. If you go too early, you wont be in the system at all, and you wil jus thave to come back. Ur proabbly close to the 10 business days, so coul dgive it a try. Ensure u download a form before u go to save u time if ur in the system, BUT no application for a SSN has been received.

Not sure where you are located Mike but at the local office in New Jersey they requested a 3 week wait following POE prior to applying. I went to the local Social Security office exactly three weeks to the day with filled-in form, passport and birth certificate in hand; had my card 6 days later.

ugh, that sucks. Not sure what we're going to do, as my wife POE'd, but she still lives in Canada until our house goes through. Well we POE'd on the 3rd...the 24th is the 3 week mark. Can I go there on behalf of her?

Doubt it - someone showing up with someone else's id to apply for (or ask about) an SSN kind of looks like fraud :) What's the rush, once she arrives, she can go to the SSN office herself and probably have it with 7-10 days as someone noted above

Well, rush is, we were told by H&R block in the states, from a international tax expert, that my wife should do her taxes in Canada first, then I come in and do mine, but my wife called H &R in Canada and they said explained our situation and their international expert...an american with PR in Canada basically doing the reverse of what are, that she NEEDS her US SSN and card to do her taxes, I wonder why.

It's a complicated situation, at the same time, I'm trying to hold out a little because we're waiting on a approval of a sale of a house to go through and to get that first time home buyers tax credit, if I do my taxes now, then get them redone later, that's fine, but I'm going to basically have to refile, which costs like 100$ or something like that and I want to try and avoid that.

So, ya a lot up in the air right now.

Yeah, my wife needs to do her taxes too...and we're waiting on my card. If it's not in the mail by Wednesday (ten business days after my POE), I'll head down to the SSN office on Thursday morning. One just can't leave these things to chance. Being proactive is always worth it!

I checked with my tax accountant. She said (paraphrasing of course) If you are getting a refund, you can pretty much file when you want, (within reason, I mean why would you want the government to keep your money???) If you are getting a refund, you do not have to have your taxes filed by April 15th. That is the deadline if you OWE money.

Ah, really? I already done some calculations myself, I don't think I owe. Not with the insane amount of interest I'm paying on stu loans...

Well, the wife's green card came today. That was quick. But I don't really care about that so much, we want the SSN lol Well we do, but now we want the SSN. As soon as that comes in, time for the wife to get a NY drivers lic. Can my wife carry around her Ontario and NY drivers licenses? I know in NY, you can't carry around another NY license but what about an Ontario one too...
