Emergency rooms already exist to protect your life.

Right. They will treat anyone's medical emergency (protection of life) regardless of ability to pay...and consequently transfer that cost onto higher premiums.

Does anyone remember how back in the presidential campaign days there was so much clamor on VJ for a "break" from politics?

I remember.

So the Fire Dept. won't bother to rescue anyone? They only put out fires?

point is, it's not their primary purpose. if you think a bunch of weekend fire fighters are adept at that, feel free. i don't expect them to have near the training nor the proficiency that a full time fire department would have. nor am i willing to bet my life on them rescuing me.

Wait, I'm confused...

Didn't the Dems spend the last year telling us how bad the evil health insurance companies were? Didn't they change the name of this plan from "Healthcare Reform" to "Health Insurance Reform"? Now they're telling me that in 4 years I'm going to be required by law to to buy insurance from these evil companies?

Something else that's confusing me...

Didn't I hear someone say that the fine for not buying insurance is going to be around $700 per year? That works out to about $60 a month. Can anybody really get health insurance for only $60 a month, even with a government subsidy? Didn't I also hear someone say that the insurance companies won't be able to deny me coverage, even if I've got a pre-existing condition? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to pay the fine until I get sick, and then pay for the insurance until I'm well again?

Wait, I think I'm beginning to understand...

If the only people actually PAYING for health insurance are sick, then the insurance companies are going to be paying out a lot more than they're taking in. We'll punish those evil insurance companies by putting them out of business!

But wait... who will provide our health insurance after that? What sort of business can afford to operate in the red indefinitely without going out of business?

Most fire fighters around here are volunteer. They do just fine.

No, the point is that we have public services which protect life and property that isn't based on ability to play. If you should ever have to dial 911 (God forbid), they won't be asking you for your credit card number before dispatching the necessary service. If you have cancer, you should be able to get treatment for your cancer regardless of ability to pay. It follows the same logic.

we don't call 911, we call the neighbors. later on we call the coroner to come pick up the body. :star:

as i've said before, 911 out where i live is a 30-45 minute wait for a deputy to show up. lots can happen in that time frame.

remember that public services are paid for with tax dollars. they are not free services.

So if your house is on fire, you don't call 911? If you have a heart attack, you're going to rely solely on your neighbor to resuscitate you? Do your neighbors charge you for this service?

Because you'll die without being treated and your life matters regardless of income or ability to pay. If your house is on fire, we'll try to save it and rescue anyone who might be trapped inside. We even provide medical treatment to prisoners in this country, which is specifically spelled out in the Constitution.
