I think you are way over playing the idea that the South went RIGHT because the democrats gave up a few votes for Civil Rights.

Lyndon Johnson, upon signing the Civil Rights Act and reflecting on the political significance to the Democratic Party:

"We have lost the South for a generation." If I'm overstating the result, then I'm in the good company of LBJ.

It did take another 10-15 years for LBJ's prediction to become reality. Only with the ascendance of Reagan in 1980 did the GOP convincingly swing the South.

The picture in that post made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

This vote could quite possibly be the beginning of the end. God I pray it's not.

Beginning of the end of what?

During the War of 1812, the British sacked and burned Washington DC.

During the Civil War, Confederate Forces several times came within a few miles of Washington and were perilously close to seizing and burning it.

There have been Soviet era ICBMs pointed at Washington for the past 60 years, ready to take it out within minutes of notice.

And you're praying to God because Congress is in session and taking a vote? Talk about overdramatic.

Dare I say this is the most hyped up people have been in recent history. I know I'm not the only one who's heard "normal" people talking about taking action and "doing something about this government." While I know that's mostly rhetoric, the feelings are there and they're starting to worsen.

Additionally, your favorite CA rep along with your favorite "cool, hip, world leader" are only just beginning their plan to pass more and more legislation that interprets our Constitution to mean spending more money and expanding govt. bureaucracy. Doubling the size of the IRS is not a "jobs bill."

The snowball is starting to roll down the hill. With any luck, it'll warm up before it gets any bigger. But, I pray because things are in place for that ball to keep on rolling and gather a lot of snow before it finally hits someone's front door.

LBJ was wrong. Carter was the first Southern Democrat to win on his own since the Civil War. LBJ won the sympathy vote after JFK's assasination and the Democrats painted Goldwater as an extremist.

The Civil Rights Act wasn't huge fiscal burden and most people knew the Civil Rights Act righted a wrong that existed since before the founding of the republic.

See what I mean, this is too far fetched to believe..

You are suggesting right after that vote, the South seethed ... yet still hung in there with the Dems until reagan,,, then the dam broke and the inner racist caused them to gravitate to the RIGHT?

Like I said, if you track social policy and the LEFTWARD drift of the Democrat party I think my time-line makes more sense and it was for THAT reason they went Republican.
