Employer knowing about K1 visa process

Hi there,

We just started K1 visa process and I was wondering if my employer needs to know that I am in this process and will quit work eventually, at any point until I get my visa?

I would prefer that they do not know anything since I have a feeling they may let me go earlier than I want to leave if they find out; I still need my job to pay the bills.

I also plan to hopefully continue visiting my love in USA every second weekend until I move.

What was your experience?

Did anyone contact your employer during K1 visa process?

dont tell them and they wont know. no one contacts anyone about anything. the most suspicious they may get is if they know about your USC love interest if you travel a lot to see them and if you ask for a letter as proof of employment for ties to canda.

its really none of thier business, when you get your interview date, just take a day off for it, they dont have to know what it is all about, just make sure you give adequate (2 weeks) notice b4 u up and quit.

they have no legal need or right to know of your intent to immigrate to the US until you deem it so.

Just be careful with the watercooler conversations.

Agreed! No need to tell them if you don't want to. I've asked my HR dept for an updated letter of employment each time I cross, and I just said that I need proof of employment so they don't give me a hard time at the border. When someone some work asks if I am moving to the US cause my fiance is from there, I just say, we haven't figured out if he is coming here or I am going there

I wouldn't say anything until you're very close to the end. And i know even then, some people have quit and found out they had to wait to go thru a waiver process, so be careful.

Paul gave work six weeks notice - he informed them the monday after he got Packet 4 with his interview date. This is now his last week of work. He thought it was better to give them the full six weeks as, hey, he's going to need references...and money .

I definitely agree: go with your gut instinct on this. If you think giving lots of notice isn't going to be to your benefit, then wait until you know exactly when you're leaving to tell them (assuming you leave yourself the customary period of time, of course).

I had the same concerns as you did. At no time did immigration contact my employer. I was planning on telling them the Monday after my Interview and giving them 6 week notice.

I kept my secret quiet until about 2 weeks before my interview. I even kept the secret that fact that we had been engaged for the past 1.5 years.

The 2 weeks before my interview during a discussion my boss asked what I was planning on doing being that my girlfriend was living in the US and I was living in Canada. At this point I decided that I better come clean then to say we don't know then 2 weeks later drop it on them. Afterall I need a good reference from them when I am job hunting down here in the US. So I ended up giving then 8 weeks notice and they were very good about it.

Just keep it quiet to yourself and you will be fine.
