 that's good Danu!!

I filled out ours, didn't take long at all. We got the short form too. And in 10 years, should we both still be alive..the answers will be the same...(except the age part...)

I would find it very daunting to make such an assumption. Tomorrow is promised to no one, but good luck!

Hello Canadian Forum!!!!star_smile.gif

Some of the replies here about not wanting to fill it in because they 'don't want to volunteer personal information...etc etc'...is alittle amusing to me considering the posters on this site have presumably been through the immigraton process and had to volunteer far more information and answer far more intrusive questions open to more scrutiny than the name/address/age/race questions on the standard Census form.

I will say that I think it's all bunk anyway. They say it's for allotment of Govt money and to correctly allocate representation---but really, the results & statistics will get skewed to say whatever the conrolling agency ( read the Census Bueau ( or White House) ) want it to say.

Just my opinion. Hope you don't mind. I didn't realize I was crashing the Canadian forum until I was ready to post.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

We've just watched the movie 2012. Mark thinks that we all need to complete the forms quickly and accuratly....because the Govt needs to know how many ARKS to build in each state. whistling.gif lol

I filled out the form 10 years ago. They say the one you get in your mailbox is 'anonymous'. Just for grins, I filled out one I picked up at the store, filled that one in instead of the one I got in the mail. I mailed in that one. A few weeks later, got a knock on my door. Was a census taker, she said I had to answer her questions, even though I told her I had filled one in and mailed it. I had to either give her my birth date, or my SSN. This year, I am going to fill out the one in the mailbox. Will be interesting to see if I get a knock on the door after I fill out the 'official' one. So don't be surprised if someone knocks at your door asking the same info.

Now, that I find interesting, and that's as politely as I can phrase it.

The form we received asks specifically how many people lived in the household as of April 1, 2010. If you, Kathryn, or anybody for that matter, mailed in their form with a number assigned to that question, I wonder how you were able to establish an event that has not happened yet, as it is assigned to a date of the future.

Either one takes the Census seriously, which would imply a simple inability to mail it back before April 1, 2010, or one thinks it's a bunch of BS and a waste of taxpayers' money, which would imply one could fill in anything, claim to be an Pacific Islander of some form, and so on. Who really cares.

What is impossible, however, is to have mailed it back already, and to take it seriously, as it is impossible to have answered the questions truthfully and have mailed it back at this point in time.

Seriously.

We actually checked the instructions that came with the form to see if we were supposed to wait until April 1st to return it. The form specifically said 'fill it out and mail it back today'. So we followed the instructions :).

Actually what happens is that each form is mailed to an address. When the form from that address is returned, the information from the form is entered into a master sheet and the address ticked off so if they don't have a form returned from that address label then they will do the follow up. The data is collected but the names associated with the data are not released I believe it is for 100 years. You can't get public access to any personal census information for a census taken after 1910 at the moment, so in that sense the information is anonymous. They will release statistical data and summaries of the information collated from the many different forms and use that information to identify trends and re-distribute population based finances and resources. Those who have access to the personal details are sworn to secrecy with strong penalties of imprisonment and fines for any abuse of that access. To be honest, census takers deal with so much personal information from so many different people that it is impossible to keep one person straight from another. You just don't remember the details and you just aren't interested in remembering the details.

We're a pretty open group here and don't mind 'party crashers' as long as you come to play and not throw stones - so welcome, and thanks for your comments.

I agree, the Government already has so much personal information that anything released through the Census isn't going to open the flood gates to identify theft or personal invasion :D . I disagree that the information is going to be skewed, though. Basically the census itself is a huge database that makes no conclusions or sets parameters for the information. Those who have access to the database can skew it - read Government, etc. - and can try to misuse the information, however, the census information itself is an historic document and future generations eventually will have access to the full unstructured data. Any skewing will become very apparent and obvious - and will be earmarked to the reputation or legacy of that regime. As the summary data will be available to a lot of organizations with opposing priorities and agendas when it is released, any misuse of the information tends to be discovered quickly and the errors balanced out.

If you are a human being as science knows it, you are unable to answer the questions truthfully before April 1. Plain and simple. Unable, as the questions are phrased very specific (did live, not assume to live) and contain a specific date (4-1-2010).

You can get hit by a bus tomorrow, your husband can have a stroke or heart attack, and something tragic can happen to your son or daughter as well. The fact that people even assume it's easy to predict what happens to the about 300,000,000 US residents within the next 2 weeks is proposterous and proof that people don't take the Census seriously. Hence, there you have it: a huge waste of taxpayers' money.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Show me a single data collection agency -- governmental or otherwise -- that doesn't factor in "margin of error". OF COURSE there are going to be discrepancies between the provided information and the actual information, just as there are discrepancies in virtually every election vote counts. Does that automatically mean that we have to scrap the whole process because of minor deviations? Remember that the census does NOT track individuals AS individuals -- it tracks individuals as statistics that form part of greater trends. When you're talking about 300,000,000 people, even 100,000 erroneous census forms isn't going to have a massive effect on the general, amalgamated data.

It's really a straw man argument to suggest that even a single error renders the whole process flawed.

Hi Everyone,

I still haven't received my form yet....

Doubt that I will ever recieve it....

And I'm not going to chase after them for it, as it is their responsibility to send such....

Heck, USPS doesn't even deliver to my front door (or to anyone else on our end of the street).....

So more likely than not, the census worker will not deliver either..

Lol..I'll wait for them to come to my house....(that is if they can find it....;)......)

Hmmm...I wonder what will happen if I don't fill out the census? Oh well, I'll see what happens there..

Lol..Would they mind if 3 less people in our house were counted? (and about 20 other people on our street..lol..)

I filled out more than enough information for immigration...They can just use those records instead....

Darn..Now I have that cheesy census song in my head....

"We can't move forward, until you mail it back..."....annoying....

Happy form filling everyone! :star:

Ant

Btw..My MIL used to work for the US Census, many years ago...Oh what interesting stories she had to tell!

(imagine a little old lady knocking on your door...funny... )

Lol..And yes, this is the same MIL who yelled at my Canadian ex-relative (the one I mentioned about in the insurance thread, remember her) for wanting to include me in the 2006 Canadian Census, despite the fact that I had already married and moved to the USA...Now that is wrong! :bonk:

Darkchilde794-Lol..I don't mind them coming to my house...And they are welcomed to come too...

Not my fault that they didn't send me the form in the mail in the first place....

I've got cookies and other snacks for them too, if they want....

Now if only they can find my house...

I'm not joking...People have a really hard time finding our house...

Everyone get lost around here..Heck, before we moved here, we got lost too.....

Our house is literally in the middle of nowhere!

Down widing country/rural dirt roads, hidden amongst the mountains...

Our mailbox is 1-2 miles away, and not even USPS delivers to our door...

Our post office where our mail is sorted out is 20 miles away....

The main paved road is 7-10 miles away....

Our street doesn't even have a street sign...

We have no street lights...

We have no cell phone reception/service, cable tv, or curbside garbage pickup

It's a miracle that I have a landline telephone and internet service out here..lol...

We see more farm animals, wild animals, and barns, than people...lol....

Let's just say that if they find our house...It will be a miracle, indeed!

(and yes, I'll fill out the form then, for the trouble they had to go through to find us...lol...)...

Ant

P.S. Hope they don't find the census workers don't go after you and your hubby either. Good thing you filled out the form..
