I knew the economy wasn't great on arrival here, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would struggle to find a job. Whether they are saying I am "Overqualified" i.e the job will bore you or getting no reply from higher level jobs. This whole situation is turning dire. A teacher by trade ( but experienced in a variety of other jobs), I have been asked to jump through so many bureaucratic hoops its crazy!. I am not sure how many resumes I have sent out since I arrived, several hundred I expect and have not been contacted by a very small number despite having excellent skills, qualifications and references. It is really getting me down. As if it wasn't hard enough, my wife is now expecting! so even more pressure to find something. So if anyone in San Diego is looking for a reliable, hard working brit, please drop me a line. thanks.. Rant over.

Perhaps you have already looked into this, but what about starting out with substitute teaching? Not sure of the pre-reqs but it would be a start. I know a lot of people are on the substitute rolls night now in CA, but just a few calls from teachers who like your work can lead into regular hours of work.

Also, temp agencies are a better place to start. In this economy employers love to use the "over-qualified" excuse. Which is sad, because why would someone apply for a job unless they were willing to do the work.

Keep at it, something will come. (F)

My husband and I are both teachers and have searched for work for months, the school year is almost over and no-one is taking on subs now. We don't know what to do, look for work everyday, try to think of ways to earn money. All we can come up with is to teach English in Italy, I have already sent an inquiry to the Italian Embassy in LA to find out what visa he needs. I am an EU citizen (Scottish)so I should be able to go there OK. Still it would involve giving up the permanent resident visa I waited 4 years for, spent loads of time and money on, my husband gave up a US job to live with me in UK (made him ill, the ####### weather)and now we would have to do a 4 week CELTA course and then look for poorly paid teaching jobs. However we would at least be in Italy! I don't know if it will pan out, we will be eating into our savings again, we have been living off them since we arrived last August and had planned on buying a cheap foreclosure home. Thankfully we held off, no idea that the job search would be next to impossible. No idea where we will end up or how we will live when and if we can ever retire (we are 52 and 50 now)Already taken my pension in a lump sum and a small monthly payment. OK will stop ranting and best of luck to you and all the others in the same dire situation. I understand about not knowing what to say to family and friends back home. I seldom call home or email now.
