Hi friends,

i am in U.S since last 4 months..I am a doctor by profession and writing my boards presently. I got married in nov, 09. I live with my in laws..I thought and had an impression that they are nice people..But now, its getting hard to live with them..My father in law is home all the time and cribbing about things all the time. My husband is a doc too and super busy in his schedule. Even am in library all the time..But when i get home, my father in all starts complaining about this and that..'

I belong to a very good and reputed family in India..There is a huge difference in living standards. Most modestly saying, i was living a luxurious life back home. But i adjusted to lifestyle here because i love my husband & wanted to be with him. But how can you live with someone, if all you get back is anger..My husband knows this, but he is too gentle a soul to say anything to them..

It may sound like a typical story but trust me, i am unhappy. Haven't told my parents yet. i want to work and get work too, but my hubby is persistant that i study & clear my boards first..

Don't know what to do..

it must be hard to live with in-law...is there any reason as to why u guys live with them...i understand that ur husband works so is it possible to get ur own place

Do talk things over with your husband and be blatantly honest with him about your dislikes... tell him that you appreciate EVERYTHING but the living situation is getting the best of your emotions... you might wanna throw in that its hard to focus on your boards given the circumstances ;);)

Communication is the key. If your husband won't intercede, act directly. What exactly is your father-in-law complaining about? Why is he home all the time -- is he at loose ends for activities to keep him occupied so that he doesn't feel like complaining or have time or energy to complain? First idea: Find a recreational activity that you & he can share, even occasionally. Next idea: Involve him in your goals (of passing your Boards) -- ask him to read you questions from your books or exams, and ask his opinions on how easily you answered (such as, "if you were giving me an oral exam, how convinced would you be that I answered this question with confidence and knowledge?"). In short, make him feel valued as part of what YOU wish to accomplish, and show him the value of your work as a result of his helping you. Perhaps by now you know what he values in life, and you can diplomatically "guide" him to his own conclusion that when you reach your goal, it will be of benefit to him.

You are obviously an intelligent, thoughtful lady. I believe that you can achieve the above. Avoid giving up if it doesn't work right away!

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Hi friends,

My hubby had a long discussion with his father regarding the problem. But he can't change his habits. He has the habit of picking things to fight over(since he is not working, its making things even worse)..So now i am trying to convince my hubby to move to another floor of the house.. I hope it happens and i can study with some peace. I miss my home back in India:(...But still persisting..
