Quick question about the social security card. My wife has an immigrant visa CR-1 Conditional Permanent Resident and we arrived in the US on the 11th of March. From what I can gather, since I requested it on the DS 230 form, the US DoS and the DHS will request it from social security administration, automatically, after we arrive in the US. We should receive it within 3 weeks.... is this all correct?????????????

Also, in the meantime, will she be able to apply for a job if she is still waiting for the number???

It seems to depend on which state you're in. Some require SSN, some require GC, others don't.

google the DMV of the state in which you will reside... look for the acceptable ID's needed for the application...

YMMV

SSA is supposed to mail her SS card within three weeks after her arrival, but it sometimes takes longer or it never arrives.

If she would like to start working as soon as she can, I recommend her to request a SSN in person at a local SSA office.

She will need the number/card at the time of employment.

If you don't receive the card after 3-4 weeks go to your nearest office and ask them if one's been issued. Don't be surprised if it hasn't been. You can apply for your card at the office and they'll give you a temporary card before you leave. The actual card will arrive about 4 weeks later.

Yes, we were supposed to get ours and it never came, we went in person and got one issued. They processed his application then said he could come back the next day to get a printout showing what his SSN was. We did that, then about 3 weeks later the actual card came in the mail. I recommend going in person and requesting one. They cannot work without it, and they seem to be fall behind in issuing them if you requested it in your paperwork before immigrating.

Is there any ways to apply for it online or on the phone?

I entered the US with my Cr1 a little more than a month ago but im back in Canada now. I got the green card a week or so after entering, but no news about the SIN card.

I'm moving in May but i would like to get my SIN# before then...
