My husband and I began the AOS process at the beginning of this month. Since we wanted to get all the applications in as soon as possible, I didn't have a chance to changed my name. I'd like to change my last name now, but I don't want to interfere with his AOS. Has anyone ran into this issue?

First of all, changing one's name while doing immigration is not always a good idea. I'm sure you understand why. That said, changing your name based on marriage is fairly easy (compared to changing it just because you don't like your name anymore, for which you'd have to go to court).

But even if you wait until you get your GC, won't you want to have your GC reflect your new name? No problem, the I-90 takes care of this, but it cost $310. No fun? You bet. Plus, it takes time. Then, while you're looking for a job, or want to change your name on the SS card, the fun continues. Changing one's name is a personal decision, but let me tell you the best time to do it, as painless as possible: when you become a USC. It's part of the deal, you can choose any name you like, as becoming a USC is like being newly born.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I knew this would be a little confusing, but thanks for answering JustBob.

I am the US Citizen. My husband is the one applying for AOS. We filed his paperwork before I had to chance to change my name. One of the major reasons that I want to go ahead and change my name is b/c I recently started a new job that requires me to travel. It would be nice to go ahead and introduce myself with my married name while first meeting people than switch it up in a couple of months.
