Hello,

I intend to sponsor my mother as soon as I become a US. citizen which will happen next year. However my situation is quite different, and I am not sure if US consulate will deny my petition because of this. I am going to school with financial aid. My son is now on medicaid. My financial status is quite tight, however, I can ask my aunt to cosign with me in sponsoring my mother over here. Do you think this will be ok?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

as long as between both of you make over the 125% poverty guideline, there's no problem.

An aunt is not classified as a household member for the I-864A. So it does not look like you would be able to combine income with her to meet the requirement. She will have to stand on her own income and qualify using the form I-864.

From the I-864A:

For purposes of this form, a "household member" is:

A relative who has the same principal residence as the sponsor and is related to the sponsor as a spouse, adult child, parent, or sibling;

A relative or other person whom the sponsor has lawfully claimed as a dependent on the sponsor's most recent Federal income tax return even if that person does not live at the same residence as the sponsor;

The intending immigrant, in certain circumstances. (See "How Can the Intending Immigrant Be Considered a Household Member"?)
