Sending money to the Philippines

I've already met my fiancee in person and started the K1 Visa process. I left her some money before coming back to the states but I need to send more to her.

I used Western Union Online once already sending about $100 USD as a test, which worked out perfectly. So then I go to send a $500 and they denied it. So I tried again with $100 USD, maybe the 500 was too high, but they continue to deny it. Very wierd. They want me to show up in person with the cash but Im trying to do this from the internet wity my Master credit/debit card.

So I do a google search and I find several companies/websites that offer similar services of transerfering money world wide, some specifically dealing with just Philippines.

Anyone else sending money to their fiancee by doing it online? If so which website/company would be recomended? For best, fastest, secure way of doing this? I want least hassel too but I understand the hassel is for fraud purposes.

Please advis, thanks.

Yes. Try Netbank.com. Another VJ'er with his wife in Philippines recommended it to me. I have yet to open an account but he swears by it. What you do is open a simple checking account and ask for a regular ATM cash card. Once you receive the card, you FedEx it to your fiancee in the PH, but don't activate until she receives it. The account is under your name and your name is on the card, however, you can simply transfer funds from your regular bank into this account and then she can withdraw from your NetBank account using the ATM Card you FedEx to her. Joel says there aren't any fees.

Here's his profile. You can PM for details:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showuser=6533

Here's my PM to him about it:

Hi Joel,

My fiancee is also in the Philippines (Cebu). I've been wiring her money through Western Union, but the cost is like $16! Anyhow, Jinky wants to know if the ATM works on most ATM machines and what kind of ATM charges are there?

Also, is there a minimum balance that I need to keep in my NetBank account?

How soon after you opened account did they mail you the ATM card? Did you then personally mail it to your wife? Any tips on how to get it there the fastest? Regular mail seems to take 2 weeks.

Thanks for your help!

Steven and Jinky

I don't recall if I replied to this. Sorry if I didn't.

No atm fees for netbank. I never had trouble finding an atm, just look for symbols Cirrus, NYCE, Star.

The card takes probably 10 business days or so to be delivered, I don't recall. I took the card with me when I went to the Philippines and just left it with her. Otherwise use Fedex, though I would check if they will send atm card. Don't activate it until she gets it.

Joel

Thanks for that idea. I thought about sending her an ATM card where I could just add money here to it and she can take it out over there. Now I know exactly how to do that. Its good for long term, but...

Is there any way that I can send her money in the next few days? What would be the best way?

Appreciate all advise, thanks.

Yes. Try Xoom. Here's the website. I've used them before. Their fees are cheaper than Western Union.

I used a service called xoom which is much cheaper than Western Union and can be done online, it was simple to use, I used it a few times. I went back to Western Union because they had a promotion in my area where alot of filipinos live that only cost me $12 to send any amount up to $800 but that promotion is over now so I switched to sending the money through a filipino shipping company called Johnny Cargo they only charge $7 to send any amount of money to my fiance bank account.

I agree with Lucky Money- fast, reliable, and very efficient. Been their customer for 9 years I think. I also send money online thru Western Union, it's quick but the exchange rate is lower than Lucky Money. I've tried sending thru Xoom also, but it took a week before my sister got the money.

For 2 years I sent money over Westernunion. I don't know why they denied $500. I have sent as much as $2400 for a medical emergency although that had to be done over the phone rather than online. On my last trip I just gave her a ATM card from my bank. They only charge a $2 ATM fee and the exchange rate is the same as the official rate. Works very good for her.

I would suggest you get her a debit card on a new savings account, tied together with yours. Send it to her fedex.

Why pay ongoing transfer fee's? I just get online, move money from one account to another and Done!!!

In an emergency, you can have cash available to her in less than a minute. Can any other method do that?

Net cost, 1$ per transaction.

In the short term, you could use one of the other suggestions above.

Hi,

I sent my wife a debit card to my savings acct. She just goes to an ATM machine and gets what I tell her. It only cost a couple of bucks.

Works great and there's no waiting. Western union was way expensive.

Netbank. No international ATM withdrawl fee. I just transfer money from my account to a second account I setup for my wife and she can usually get the money immediately. Everything is totally free and I have checked the exchange rate she was getting a couple times and it was reasonable.

I don't know why anyone would do anything else. This is so easy and free. Only problem is getting the card there. I left mine there when I went over but you could send it Fedex.
