US may be seeking Israel 'regime change'

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration's row with Israel over settlements has prompted some analysts to wonder whether it seeks "regime change," a new government that can make peace with the Palestinians.

...

In unusually harsh words, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday that his right-wing government's plans to build new settler homes in east Jerusalem sent a "deeply negative signal" about Israel's ties to its top ally.

"Is this about regime change, or is it about (Israeli) behavior modification?" asked Aaron David Miller, a Middle East peace negotiator in past Republican and Democratic administrations.

...

Former president George H.W. Bush and his top diplomat James Baker did much the same thing with then Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Shamir and helped pave the way for Yitzhak Rabin to become prime minister.

...

I don't doubt that there are some (Obama) people who are angry enough to want to see the (Netanyahu) government fall," he [Kurtzer, the former US ambassador to Egypt and Israel] said.

Want peace in the Middle East?

Remove the thorn out of the wound of a predominantly Muslem region. Give the Palestineans their land back, and turn Israel into a nation where people from every region can live in peace. Most importantly, stop giving Israel a dime or the taxpayers' money, and let them know if they continue making trouble they are on their own. Its' really that easy.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

And what should we expect of Palestine? Are they nothing more than innocent by standards?

Wasn't it jewish land long before Islam was invented?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Is your house not built on land that belonged to the Native Americans long before you were invented?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I thought Native Americans didn't believe in land ownership? But that's not what this thread is about, is it?

Besides, if the Jews left the middle east who would the terrorists shoot missles at or send suicide bombers against? Each other?..... oh yeah.... probably. B-)

Terrorists are indeed the product of power struggles and have nothing to do with religious belief.

Well, you are slowly coming around. Muslims need to learn that radical Islam is a violent political movement.

I read something very similar in The Atlantic. That all this posturing and blustering on the part of the Obama administration is just positioning for Tzipi Livni to win the PM election coming up.

Rich, I always knew that you were a blind supporter of Israel. What I was not previously aware of was that much of this support is because you see the Jews as cannon fodder for terrorists.

Wow!

Coming around to what? I have always believe terrorism is a product of power struggle whether or not that power struggle has any legitimacy is another matter. Terrorism is not a good means to achieve solutions to problems however and eventually compromises with everyone included have to be reached because there is no other solution beyond annihilation.

That's what the post appears to suggest.

Rich has always (in VJ time) been an unapologetic, in-your-face and unquestioning supporter of Israel. Given his posting history, we both know that. I'd say he messed up the wording a bit because in a vacuum that is what it sounds like. But it doesn't take much of a stretch to realize that's not quite what he meant.
