Everyone can be rated. Only up votes allowed. This will allow people to highlight "good things" said regardless of who. If a post gets eight more more ratings up it is highlighted.

Well I'm still waiting for one positive rating for anything I have pasted in the Working & Traveling prior to getting a Green Card forum. I'm not losing any sleep over it, but you would think if this thing is going to work that when over a hundred people view threads someone would throw you a bone.

This is why any kind of rating system is broken. People feel entitled to "good ratings" when they post advice, and they get disgruntled when their efforts don't seem to be noticed in the manner they feel it should be. This, despite the fact that people were content with just helping others when we didn't have a rating system.

Take satisfaction in knowing that you have probably made somebody else's journey a little bit easier. That's worth more than a thousand +1's.

If anyone should get positive ratings it's me for the stuff I have posted in that forum. Like I said I'm not losing any sleep over this, just pointing out that as far as I'm concered it's not of much use. Maybe if people rated what I posted I wouldn't have to answer the same question a thousand times.

i gave you a plus 1 :)

Where is said positive rating? If it's for any SSN posting I seem to have missed it.

When I earlier mentioned a system of only positive ratings, it was not a reference to a system of rating individual posts.

Some boards use a system which creates a rating for the individual wherein members can give a "plus" for a post. These positive ratings are cumulative rather than being limited to an individual comment. The more positive ratings a member has, the higher their reputation.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Ewok started out the new overhaul with an individual reputation system but (in my opinion correctly) ditched it. For the purposes of a family immigration website, I believe a focus on the positive is the best way to design the site. There's plenty of negative involved in this process without enhancing it through the use of reputations and negative ratings. If it were me, I'd ditch the heart system too.

I understand that, but even if you can only positively influence a reputation system, the fact that it's a reputation system is going to have inherent negative qualities. On VJ, for example, if you have a high post count but a low reputation count, people will see that as a negative. Or if you happen to have all the right OT friends, you can be a total jerk but still have a great reputation.

There shouldn't be any ranking system in Off-Topic forums.

And if someone has a high post count but a low reputation count - how is that bad?
