I'm on Nuvaring. It's the ring you wear for 3-4 weeks and then take out for a week. It seems to not be available in the UK. I love it because pills make me nauseous.

When considering moving over there it was a big con that they don't have that option. Hope you find something that works for you soon! I definitely recommend Planned Parenthood. Also, if your spouse is a student you may be able to visit a university clinic for a lower price as well.

I disagree because who would pay for it if you didn't pay for it? Taxes are high enough already :-)

This was not supposed to be a political discussion. Do you really believe what you just said though? It's bad enough we pay taxes on sanitary protection.

Yep. If somebody can afford to buy luxuries then they can pay for their own contraceptives. However, if they do have a low income then of course it should be subsidized or completely free. There's nothing political about it. I'm liberal but I think everyone should pay their way if they are able -- I do.

Some insurance plans pay for a portion of such more expensive contraceptives as Nuvaring. I was on it for a while, and while it was more expensive than the pill, my insurance did cover some of it. I believe I was paying about $40 a month for it....which I know is not the cheapest option, but given my personal choice of going with this type of contraception, I chose to pay the extra out of pocket cost.

I agree. I hope there is no more medical system debate in the thread.

I am happy we have a resource to help each other with this important topic. I am loving that people can help explain the way they switched after moving.

Also, I just wanted to point that out another bit of price info as I know how hard the move is and how many unexpected things can come up. We have two Planned Parenthood clinics in my city. One charges regular fees, the other is based on sliding scale. I used the sliding scale clinic while I was in school and it was a life saver. Those yearly check ups are VERY important! If you are in a financial bind they can usually work with you or recommend another resource.

Good luck!

the shot would be awesome if it didnt almost guarentee osteoperosis later on in life... booo

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

There's a pill you can take (I know you said you didn't like taking a pill...) that makes you have only 4 periods a year. I was considering it.

My question is....do you think its healthy for your body to not have a period? That's the main thing from changing to a pill like this.

I doubt it's entirely healthy not to. I was on the pill long before I needed contraceptives to make it happen more often than 4 times a year. The risk of cancer in the womb was higher when I wasn't on the pill. Of course now it's lower along with some other cancer and a different cancer is now more likely along with blood clots and diabetes. You'd have to actually look at the 4-a-year pill's listed side effects and some proper studies into it, but I personally would worry about it unless it can stop womb lining regrowing as fast. I am of course prone to paranoia.

agh double post.

One thought though: If you want the pill for contraception, the earliest warning you will get if it fails is your period... do you really want that to be three months apart? You would need to use regular pregnancy tests, just as with the implant.

I'm struggling to find any equivalent for my pill.

I am currently on Cerazette, (brought from the UK), which is the POP pill and it has the active ingredient of Desogestrel, which as far as I can tell, isn't used over here.

I have found 3 other kinds of pill in the US which are POP:

Micronor

Nor-QD

Ovrette

..but none of these are anything like the pill I take now.

I am researching ahead of time, as I still have 4 months supply left, but I think I will probably just let the doctor tell me what is best.

Out of curiosity, has anyone had experience with any of these brands?

In my opinion shouldn't contraception be free to all females over the age of 16yrs old?

It's free in the UK so why not in America?

We first met online 2004, but things started to get serious in Dec 2007. Made my first visit to the USA in march 2008 for 2 weeks. Then returned again in Aug 2008 for 3 months.. Then i came back to the UK for 5 months to return back to the USA April 2009 for another 3months.

I used to be on Cerazette (but stopped because it gave me MAJOR mood-swings and painful boobs), but when I was prescribed, I asked my GP if I could find the same thing in America and he said yes. I think you should talk to Planned Parenthood or a GP here in the states, if you haven't already?

And I agree, weescotlassie, but we wouldn't want to appear to be socialist. :P

The Yazmin I'm taking was $22 a pack in Canada. Here its $40/pack. I was shocked when the pharmacist told me how expensive it is.

I've got 1 more pack of Yazmin to go, then I'm on the generic brand(mostly covered by insurance)...which was $20 for 3 packs!
