How do Canadian Diplomas traslate in terms of college education in the United States?

If you're a Canadian College Graduate basically, what would the equivalent be in the US?

I have a college diploma, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's the equivalent to an Associate's Degree down here.

I'm thinking it fits the "Associate of Arts" degree, but not sure...

Well, many Canadians with degrees find themselves going to graduate school in the US. So if you have a bachelors degree from a Canadian university, you are qualified to attend graduate school in the US- provided you have the grades and can score well on the GMAT or LSAT or whatever you decide to take. So, they would need to be considered equivalent for this to happen.

I don't really know about college degrees or anything like that.

haha I have a diploma in "Law & Security Administration". Try figuring where THAT fits! Fortunately, I went on to do a BA in Poli Sci, so most of the time I don't even bother listing the other one.

One usually has to send their Cdn schooling to be assessed. A Cdn diploma program does not always equal an Associates degree in the USA. There are Diploma program in the USA as well. Many companies provide this service.

Unless the employer asks to specify/get it translated, I would probably just say it's comparable to an Associates Degree.

The community college I went to in Washington has an Associates of General Studies, which would fit that diploma better than an AA would.

Canadian colleges are equivalent to a community college in the US; thus a diploma will be an associates degree

Canadian universities are equivalent to a college in the US; thus a bachelor's will be a bachelor's

Canadian graduate degrees are equivalent to American graduate degrees

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and last year when I interviewed for the State, they required a foreign degree equivalency assessment. I had to have my university send an agency (ECE) the full transcripts and they reviewed it. The cost was $85 if I recall. They granted me degree equivalency meaning my Canadian degree met the exact same requirements and standards to the American counterpart. This is also the case for diplomas etc. You have to ensure whenever you embark on any educational endevour that the university or college etc is fully accredited; this is a must for degrees if you want to pursue higher learning or need to have it assessed by another country, particularly the USA. I don't know the rules in Europe or other parts of the world. I'm looking to do a Masters in SW and couldn't do it without proper accreditation of the BSW in the first place.

You can find Educational Credential Evalutoars (ECE) at www.ece.org for more information. They were quite helpful.

If and when you seek employment in the USA chances are employers, especially those in professional work, will require this.

Was going to list the conversions...

For example, 0 degrees celcius = 32 degrees farenheit...

But I read further..and realized the OP meant Educational Degrees...Oops....

As a rule of thumb...

Canadian College = American/US Community College

Canadian University = American/US College

Got it? (lol..that's one Canadian/American coversion you definitely need to know about...)

To the OP...My (American) husband actually has a similar community college degree like yours...

His was a 2yr community college "Associates in Science (AS) Degree: Major in Genaral Studies/Liberal Arts"

He says it's a general studies program, and depending on your major, it could also be a "Associates in Arts"(AA) Degree too

(He then used his AS degree towards a 4yr college/university "Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree: Major in Mathematics"...)

But from what I got out of it, this should be the American equivalent....

You might want to ask a local community college (which they might do for free and/or a small fee) to help you figure this out too...You can also compare Canadian diploma requirements to American ones, to see if they are similar....

As well, you might want to show them your prior school transcripts, course syllibuses, teacher references, etc. to help..

Generally, from what I've noticed, Canadian educational requirements aren't too much different from American ones...

So more likely than not, this will "translate" well for further educational and/or career pursuits..

They mostly are but know that you may be asked to provide documentation by approved evalutors to confirm the qualifications. Some of the issues relate to course content. There are some differences.

I'm noticing that all US universities require Statistics and Human Biology as prerequisite to MSW programs. In Canada, stats are required by not human biology.
