Hello all,

My wife and I are wondering what number to use for the "Non Immigrant Visa Number" on Part 3(a) of the I485 form. Usually people will use the 8 digit red number on their passport

for their current visa.

The latest visa my wife has on her passport is expired and she was given an adjustment of status to be a student... but never left the country.

She now has an F1 visa. We were looking for a Non Immigrant Visa Number on the I20 but cant find one.

Does anybody know what number we should use?

Thanks so much in advance for your help guys!!!

Check the US visa that is in your passport. On the right side of the visa, there should be a string of RED numbers (I think 8 digits long). That is the non-immigrant visa number.

Are you sure we use this number? Isn't this considered invalid because the visa on the passport is expired?

She has a new visa but never left the country so she never got a stamp. The only numbers that we would have are on her I-20.

What is her "new visa?" Is this visa in her passport? If so, the visa number is the number in RED, not the control number.

The visa she has is an F-1. She never left the country then reentered after getting this visa so she has no unexpired visa in her passport.

We could put that red number on her passport down, but it's expired.

** moving from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to "Adjustment of Status from Work, Student, & Tourist Visas" as you are adjusting from a F1 visa and the prior forum is for K1, K2, K3 & K4**

Use the CURRENT visa's number, it's in RED as Markieboy said.

Even if your current visa has expired, it doesn't matter. The visa is only a document that shows your eligibility to ENTER the US. The expiration date on the visa tells you that if you go out of the US after this date, you'll have to apply for a new visa to re-enter this country. But the time you can STAY in this country is shown on your I-94 card. F-1's stay time is usually D/S (duration of status), which means as long as you are still in the status under this visa, you can legally stay in the US.

01/13/2012 - I-751 application package mailed to CSC via USPS

01/24/2012 - Biometric appointment notice received - 2/10

02/10/2012 - Biometrics taken

07/05/2012 - Green Card arrived in mail! (No approval letter received prior to the card, no interview)

Done with USCIS until... well, next year, for N-400 :)

Winterjane,

You are a lifesaver! Thank you so much for your help! We spent hours last night trying to figure out where to get that number.

I can't wait to go home today with some good news. =)

my fiance has his k-1 visa and we are also stuck on this same question on the form. But on the visa number it has a letter and then 7 numbers so it looks like for example "H1234567" would we include the H in the visa number? thank you :)huh2.gif
