What's the reputation rating for? Will I get freebies when I do better? Is this a popularity or beauty contest?

I got so curious, Captain. I looked up Charles' profile so I could understand. He has 0 neutral and so is Sister Nagi. My bro Steve has 4. Now I get -2. I wonder if I am a bad girl.
