Hi,

I'm going to be moving to the US on a K-1 on the 18th (just a few days!), and so will have almost a month in the USA before the April 15th tax filing deadline. Will I have to file a tax return? I don't understand the system at all. I assume I'm classed as a "non-resident alien" until I get my Green Card, but what that means when it comes to taxes, I don't know.

I am also going to be keeping my UK accounts open with a significant amount (over $10,000 all in all) in them for the time being. Am I only considered a "US Person" when I get my Green Card, or will my marriage to a US citizen make me a "US Person"?

Someone please help! It's all very confusing...

The US tax year is from January 1st to December 31st. Next year, by April 15, 2011 you will fill in a tax return for 2010. Likewise you will not have to declare your UK bank accounts until next year for the 2010 assuming the average balance is over the declarable amount.

The report on your bank account is not part of your tax return info on it here. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/articl...=148849,00.html
