Delayed Report of Marriage

I've been married to my husband since 2005 and I was not able to report our marriage because I was unaware of this.

Now I need to renew my passport at the Chicago consulate and I don't know what to put in the blank where it asks me to explain why the report of marriage was delayed... should I just say I didn't know about it?

Anyone been through this before? help please!

You do know that this answer would depend on knowing which country you are originally from as the laws/requirements vary greatly.

I'm from the philippines :)

I understand that my mistake is plain ignorance but honestly I didn't know about this.

I just don't know what reason I can put on the blank provided in the form..

Just put you weren't aware you had to.

If you have your USC you can apply for dual citizenship at the same time you apply for a new passport.

We were there a few weeks ago and my wife just put "ignorance of the requirement" and they did not question it. You can get your passport pictures next to the consulate at the Walgreens/CVS, I do not remember which name. Also make sure you bring the prepaid express mail envelope to the consulate for them to mail your passport when it get back from the Philippines.
