Has any filiers here, CR1/IR1, knows how long it takes to receive a social security number after one reaches Port of entry. Also, how soon will be that the legal permanent resident after entering port of entry can work. I hear some says if there is a green card and identification that the LPR can work immediately. let me know ur intent.

an alien arriving on an immigrant visa is work authorized immediately upon entry

SSN's are typically 2-4 weeks after arrival if selecting the automatic issuance option

Another question is what type of ID does the immigrant visa spouse needs to have in order to work. I called a company for my spouse and they say forms of id are: drivers license, non driver license, ssn, us passport id or i-94 form.

what is an automatic issuance option. Is that something that my spouse signs once she reaches POE.

there's a tickbox on the ds-230 form, about the SSN.

IMO - it's 'hit or miss'. Some ppl get it, some ppl don't.

If it's been more than two weeks past the POE date, go to SSA office, apply in VISA name, and pay attention there, if 'any problem' with the application.

If you here a clerk mumble something about 'USCIS verification' - stop. Ask for a supervisor. Tell the supervisor -

Is CR-1/IR-1 visa type - look up in SAVE database, please.

Good Luck ! Most SSA front-desk clerks about clueless about the proper process for New Immigrants - and it's up to you to train them about their internal processes. Usually, mentioning 'SAVE database' is enough for them to shift into 'something else' - but if still no positive result, get the supervisor.

After the application is successfully 'accepted' - you can GO BACK to the same office, the next day, and GET the number. The card will arrive via postal mail within 30 days, as well.

re: working. You should have enough for now, but still need the SSN - check the I-9 form for your documents (as any future employer will vette your documents with the I-9 as well)

Good Luck ! (or something )

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I-551 stamp in the alien's passport is the work authorization document until the greencard arrives

as previously mentioned... the DS-230 Part II has a "tick" box to check for auto SSN issuance
