Nobel money donated

Obama gives $200,000 to Haiti fund

President Barack Obama announced Thursday that he’ll divvy up his Nobel Peace Prize money — $1.4 million — among a variety of charities, including some that help minority students go to college.

Several of those that help minority students — including the Posse Foundation, the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the American Indian College Fund — received $125,000 each.

“These organizations do extraordinary work in the United States and abroad helping students, veterans and countless others in need,” Obama said in a statement. “I’m proud to support their work.”

The complete list of charities follows.

• $250,000 to Fisher House, a nonprofit organization that provides housing for families of soldiers receiving care at military or Veterans Affairs hospitals

• $200,000 to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund

• $125,000 to College Summit, a group that works with elementary and middle schools and school districts to increase college enrollment rates

• $125,000 to the Posse Foundation, which spots public high school students who may be overlooked in the traditional college admissions process; Posse scholars are awarded four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships from colleges and universities

• $125,000 to the United Negro College Fund, which helps more than 60,000 students attend college each year

• $125,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the nation’s leading Hispanic scholarship organization

• $125,000 to the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation, which helps students from Appalachia go to college

• $125,000 to the American Indian College Fund, which helps build awareness of tribal colleges and universities, in part by distributing about 6,000 scholarships annually to American Indian students

• $100,000 to Africare, which has projects in 25 countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, that focus on HIV/AIDS, agriculture and water resource development

• $100,000 to the Central Asia Institute, which supports community-based education and literacy, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan

How many of us donate prize money to charity?

There are a lot of Nobel Laureates that donate to charity. This story is not surprising. I know one Professor from RIT or Pennsylvania area donated 100% of his Nobel Prize money to charity.

His acceptance of the peace prize/monies is unconstitutional without congressional approval.

The last time I checked, they didn't vote to allow him to accept it.

The money technically belongs to the American people.

I don't think so. He's a citizen just like any other. Where does it say that in constitution specifically? When you find it, read the entirety. When you post it, post the entirety just to make sure there isn't any reading comprehension problems on the constitution.

How much did WE pay for him to collect the prize?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
