What state are you from? Most of the states have an assigned risk pool, for those that cannot get a policy otherwise above a certain threshold.

Florida, I tried that but it has been closed to new enrollees since 1997... I cannot even get on the waiting list at this point...

The cost of what? The universal system or that Amereican health care is SO expensive. There is some major greed going on with insurance companies. They are not hurting.

The doctors and the nurses and the hospitals, as well as all the old and poor people that want Cadillac healthcare at taxpayer expense. One thing single payer healthcare will do is cut costs by necessity. Everybody will have to grow up and do with less.

Less than nothing?? For my situation ( and millions like me) Govt healthcare is a win as it is an improvment over living in fear of illness wiping everything out that you worked for...

Most uninsured don't pay those amounts. They walk away. The monies get recouped from the insureds.

I can kind of understand that but then I still don't understand the nice discounts insurance companies get. My dad went to the ER with a kidney stone years ago, was admitted for a few hours. While leaving and still halfway drugged up, was told his bill was like 5K. If he paid 2K right then, he could be done with it. So he did, on a credit card!! We were there and wished he wouldn't have done that, so maybe he could have negotiated down further on calls from billing or something. I highly doubt the insurance pays 2K for a few hours of a simple hospital visit. I am not saying I think you are totally wrong, you know a lot , but I just don't understand the discount system.

True. The current system is messed up, and failing to do the basic job of taking care of the sick and injured. With all of peoples' expectations what they are, then single payer is the only real solution.
