Hello everyone,

I am a US citizen who is currently unemployed and would greatly benefit from receiving food stamps until I am working again. I have been waiting to file the I-130 for my husband until I am once again employed. Assuming that I am earning an income about the poverty guidelines by the time I file the I-864 (and also have the support of a better-off co-sponsor since my income wasn't sufficient for the past 3 years), will signing up for food stamps for the time being interfere with getting the CR-1 application approved?

Thanks for your support and advice!

No.

Most ppl get confused with 'means tested benefits'.

This definition applies to the beneficiary - never the petitioner, never the USC.

FoodStamps is/are a 'means tested benefit'.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

you are an american citizen and therefore you have the right to accept assistance from DHS without any penalty from imigration as far as your husbands aproval however once he is here he will not be eligible to accept any assistance for 10 years or until he becomes a citizen. If you need the help go and get it.
