What specific films deserve to be watched?

I might start working again when I receive my conditional green card so I want to make wise use of my remaining days at home by watching movies, viewing NatGeo and History.com programs, and reading books. I have a number of books on the list (including Shaw's "Saint Joan," Coelho's "The Pilgrimage," Rilke's "Letters to A Young Poet," Martel's "Life of Pi," and Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew") but I'd like to ask suggestions from you all for movies.

I don't have a good impression with sci-fi movies and my husband has tried to convince me that "most sci-fi films are awesome." We watched "The Matrix," "The Matrix Reloaded," and the latest "Star Trek." We had "Titan A.E." last night. One word: terrible. Is the "Star Wars" film series worth the time?

Any genre should be fine.

Personal taste is what it really comes down to...

Are you looking to be "entertained" with an action flick?

Are you looking to laugh with a comedy?

Are you looking for good acting/serious drama?

The only movie I can recommend to anyone really to check out atleast once is:

Pan's Labyrinth

It's a Spanish language film with English Subtitles and is a great dark fairytale/drama.. Think of a much darker Alice in Wonderland.

First - Life of Pi - excellent choice. I really enjoyed it.

Second - no on the Star Wars, IMHO. However, I seem to be the only one on the planet who does not like this series.

Third - try Ironman. Inglourious Basterds was really good, too.

I don't enjoy sci-fi movies and my fiance also try to convince me that are "awesome". I really enjoy genres like suspense thriller, drama or comedy . I prefer mostly independent movies. I can recommend 2 movies: spanish film 'Sex and Lucia' and the Iranian film 'Turtles Can Fly'

We can all make a difference. Please recycle

Great!

A friend of my husband's friend found out that I haven't watched "Star Wars."

He said, "What? A person like that exists?"

That man IEA and :bonk: .

if you want a good laugh, I would watch The Hangover...

That one is very popular. I guess I really should watch that then.

You'll probably like Shawshank Redemption....your husband will act he doesn't like it, but he'll end up watching it too. :)

If you guys ever down south to San Diego this summer, I have free zoo passes. I have annual membership....love that place!

Copied. ;) The San Diego Zoo is truly amazing. I didn't see cheetahs there when we visited on November 21. :( I adore cats and big cats.

Are you into camping? Does San Diego have good campsites? My husband and I drove for 10 hours so we could camp in the Avenue of the Giants.

It will be wonderful to meet Wilma. We must speak the same language somehow (if she's from Bohol). I like Bohol. I've been there twice.

I love watching NatGeo and History channel as well.

I LOVE Star Wars , especially episode 4, 5 and 6. A good movie which combines history and space travel is Apollo 13.

I second Shawshank Redemption and Pan's Labyrinth. If you want some Americana watch "The Breakfast Club" and "Fast times at Ridgemont High". Dave made me watch them because it reminded him of when he grew up. I also like Fried Green Tomatoes and Gone With the Wind (no wonder I fell for a Southerner  ) and the Godfather movies. If you'd like something newer I really enjoyed the movies Up and Wall-E.

I trust your choices. :star: I skimmed through the pages of the "Gone With the Wind" novel years ago just to write down quotes.

I liked this one: "I was never the one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken... I'm too old to believe in such sentimentalities as clean slates and starting all over."

Yeah, I love camping! I just moved down from Alaska last year, talk about some awesome places up there to camp. But around here we have Lake Morena and Aqua Caliente (both good camp sites). I was considering a camping trip to the Grand Canyon this summer...but gotta get married Vegas first.

Ohh Wilma is actually from Cebu (or umm Lapu Lapu City)... she speaks Visayan ... I took her mom and brother with us to Bohol on my last trip coz they wanted out LLC for a while.

Oh good!

I am from Cebu.

Before I logged in here today, I reminded my husband to start planning about our goal to hike the Grand Canyon before 2010 ends. I don't know if hike is the right word. You two get married and file the AOS then perhaps we can meet some time.

Big  up for all the above!

I'm a Star Wars lover so I'd go for that (eps 4 5 and 6), but if that's not your style maybe Alien? The first and second ones are awesome! Sci-Fi meets horror movie at it's best!

Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies of all time!

Movies that I highly recommend if you never watched:

- Fried Green Tomatoes

- Driving Miss Daisy (adorable and sweet and great acting all together!)

- The Notebook (THE romantic movie)

- L.A. Confidential

- The Usual Suspects

- Fight Club

- 12 Angry Men. (Superb oldie!)

- Fargo (quirky and intelligent humour)

- Se7en

- Thelma and Louise

- As good as it gets (one of the best comedies for me)

- Jerry Maguire

- A Beautiful Mind

- The Pianist

- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (beautiful)

- Memento (great mind twister)

- Little Miss Sunshine (another quirky funny one)

- The Others (best "scary")

- Donnie Darko (weirld, cult movie, odd, I liked it :P)
