Wow.

The little town I live in, a suburb of Chicago population about 12,000, has 5 names on that list. I think you would probably find that every single town in America has made its contribution and sacrifice.

What does it mean that Vietnam cost ten times the lives as have been lost in Iraq and Afgh.

And WW2 cost ten times the Lives of Vietnam.

It means that Freedom is not free.

And it means that (hopefully) in the wars we are fighting today, we have technological edges that previous generations did not have. Edges that keep our fighting men and women alive. Better weapons and defensive gear, better communications, better field hospitals and evacuation capabilities, better remote controlled automated weaponry that keeps our guys out of harm's way.

The deadliest war in American history was the Civil War. Well over 600,000 military casualties from North and South, with many thousands more civilians.

One has not.

There is a time and place for everything, including cheap humor and mockery. There are other threads on VJ that are appropriate for that sort of thing.

In my opinion, this is not one of them.

Either post here respectfully, or don't post at all. That's just a request, of course. But I think it's a reasonable one.

I didn't realize that Australia had 50,000 troops in that war.

There was a guy I spoke to recently, who served in Vietnam, who said an Aussie saved his platoon's life. He said they were in a market and a teenager was approaching them, the Aussie shouted for them to get down and shot the ######. The teenager was carrying explosives, and had he not killed them, they would have all been dead.

At least one yank praises Aussies and realizes we don't #### around.

I think you would be hard-pressed to argue that any of the wars that the USA has fought since WW2 have been "necessary" in the sense of defending our freedoms.

Vietnam was not a "just" war by any stretch of the imagination.

yeah, that australia threw everyone they had in the military at the problem and still lost to a 3rd world country.

I believe, the political climate in this country was more highly charged in the Vietnam years than the present day. The administrations of Linden Johnson and Richard Nixon were largely responsible for that IMO.

Hard to see why people back then blamed the troops for the Vietnam war, given that the draft was in effect.

Needless to say - nothing good came out of Vietnam.
