Are immigration formalities for USC's formidable or not really?

Under NAFTA, it's fairly easy for qualified Americans (professionals with a formal job offer from a Canadian company) to get a visa and work permit in Canada. That also works the other way around, of course (US TN visa for Canadians).

I've never bothered too much with the details, since as a dual citizen I've been able to live and work freely in both countries.

I'm ok with a strong loonie, to a degree. I still have a sizeable chunk in my RRSP (equivalent to an American IRA) in Canada, in CAD.

However my son is starting university in Canada in the fall, so at some point I'll be converting my USD salary to pay for his tuition and expenses there, so I wouldn't want a TOO strong loonie.

The worrying thing is that the Canadian government WANTS to keep the loonie depressed against the US dollar. They work very hard to screw up the Canadian economy enough to keep the loonie at 70-80% of the USD at any given time, to encourage exports to the US. If the loonie is climbing slowly against the USD, that means that the best self destruction the Canadian government can manage is no longer keeping pace with the American economic self destruction, and that if Canada was actually trying to build a strong currency, the USD would be crashing vs the Canadian dollar :)

We're in a similar position: a significant chunk of my savings is still in Canadian dollars in a Canadian bank, so it'll be nice for us if the CAD gets up to 1.1 or 1.2 USD. Don't know what it'll imply for the US though. Glad I live in a relatively isolated, strongly states-rights state :)

DON'T PANIC

My employer would work this out for me. Not looking to change companies - just locations. And that's if I were to decide to take a serious look at it. Big if at this point. Possibly. They'd have to come up with a very good offer for me to consider. The idea was just floated this week and the opportunity seems great. There's a competing opportunity right here in Tampa which - unless they make the other one so I can't turn it down - would be my preference at this point. It's nice to be in demand, though.

Its not equivalent. They're similar, yes. But from a tax standpoint, they're different.

not in one sitting - you're allowed to spread it out over the day.

Good News for Northern Vermont. That will do mor efor our economy than anything that lame, worthless Obama has thought of. Every time it gets at or above PAR our business jumps tremendously, not only is it a better value our prices are cheaper to begin with, no 15% sales tax and no tx at all on food, clothes, shoes.

Last time that happened (summer '08) you couldn't walk down the street or park at the mall without kicking the Quebecois out of your way! Bring it on!

Oh, and even more come running across to escape Canadian helath care and use our large andmodern facilities built with the pro-forma of a city of 2 million with government health care just a few miles over the border.

Ah yes, a trait all Canadians are born with . . . .

The USAF had to fly the portable Tim Horton's to Afghanistan in a C-5. The RCAF didn't have a plane big enough. (next time, measure before you build it)

It has been suggested that in order to "take out" Iran...we land a bunch of Canadian soldiers in a peaceful area of Iraq, land the Tim Horton's in Afghanistan and erect a REALLY BIG sign, then sit back and watch as the Canadians invade Iran!!!!!!

the same thing could possibly work if there was a portable "Canadian Tire" store. How come no one ever mentions that?

The currency's value is the same in all the states. Not sure where your state's rights has to do with the balance of trade.

BTW, despite what you hear, Canada has a trade surplus with the U.S. for at least the last 22 years if not longer.
