Hello to everyone! My fiance was told at the social security administration of 10 day waiting period. I would like to know if anyone had a waiting period to get a social security number?

:guides:

They ask you to wait so your information is entered into the database from your entry. If you get an SSN and try and go to a bank often you'll be told the number is invalid while THAT system updates too.

Here's the SSN guide: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

We waited a bit longer than that, but 2 weeks is about standard if there are no problems with her name check. We married, then applied, so her SSN would have the same name as her GC and drivers license. Since Homeland Security had her at POE under a different name, it all had to be done manually.

Not allowed to work.

I wish we had waited. We went to the social security office right away, I even explained that we were just trying to get the SS card ASAP, that I could come back in 11 days if that would be better. They entered all of our information, and THEN told me that I just delayed us 8 weeks by not waiting 10 days! I said, I will come back next week then, and was told it was too late. she had already submitted the application. Are you kidding me? The only thing I kept reiterating was that we were doing whatever was necessary to get the card/number ASAP so that he could get a bank account, etc set up ASAP. I didn't want an 8 week delay, I am already off next Friday, so I think I may go back anyway and see if they can verify him in the system and get the ball rolling again.

Allowed to work. Ignore the PP.

The SSN will be stamped with "not valid without DHS Authorisation". You are "permitted to work" in that you can apply for an EAD.

also I should have moved this earlier but ---

** moving from "K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures" to "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" as the prior forum is for K1 questions and the new one is for AOS questions**

I think it depends on where you are in the process. Because we got married at six weeks, and applied at week nine or ten (K-1 runs for 90 days), we were too close to the expiration of her original visa to go through a manual name-check. We came back with the EAD a month or so later, and successfully applied for a SSN with her married name. It came stamped with "valid for work only" because we used the EAD to get it. The Green card was a few more months away, but Vika couldn't get a drivers license here without a SSN. When her GC arrived, we went back to get the work condition removed from the SSN.

I read the guides and we still had a problem - as I outlined above. I think (as I said above) it depends on where you are in the process. Also, what name does she want on her SS card.

There is no waiting period. Go back and do not leave until you speak to someone that knows how to do their job, it may take going up 2-3 levels in some offices choked with morons.

The K-1 holder is eligible imeeidately upon setting foot in the USA. The "SAVE" system which registers legal entries updates every night at 12:01 am. Alla got her SSN 16 hours after arriving. It is a Federal program, whatever applies to Alla, applies to you. Do not be hindered by morons who make up law when they do not know what to do.

The SS system generates the SSNs each night also. You can go back to the office (or call) the next morning and get the number, the card will take a week or so to arrive.

VJ instructions to wait two weeks after arrival are confusing, overly conservative and play into the hands of morons. VJ should change their guides on this matter...it is wrong.

Apply for the SSN in her maiden name. If she will change her name in the future, do so after you have an EAD or Green card. The name on the card is not important, the number is important.

Bullsh*t. You ran into another moron. The SSA is full of them.

The K-1 holder is eligible from day 1 until day 76 or their I-94. If anyone tells you anything except "OK, miss, here you go, you can call tomorrow to get your number and your card will arrive within a week" Then call for a supervisor.

You were delayed by retarded people working in the federal government because they can't find employment in businesses requiring results. NOT by going too soon. Alla arrived at 4 pm and we were at the SS office at 8am the next morning. At 8am the next morning she had her number and at 8:15 was added to our bank account, by noon of her second day in the USA she had her pre-appoved private university 50% scholarship in place and was enrolled for classes, and on the following Monday, 5 days after she arrived, began her classes.

Be aware of the law, be aware of your rights and do not let paid-by-the-pound government clerks hired under the affirmative action program deter you.

Actually the CORRECT box to check is

ALIEN ALLOWED TO WORK....this is the default classification for K-1s, NOT because they are really allowed to work (they aren't) bt because that allows ou to get a SS number. The system defaults that because some jurisdictions used to require SSNs to get married. This is why a K-1 can get the number and a K-2, K-3, K-4 cannot. The other K classes have no obligation to get married.

However you DO NOT NEED to check anything, let them do that if you want. Simply go and say "This is my fiancee, she has a K-1 visa and needs an SSN" A trained person knows what to do. Do not deal with untrained ones.

By the way they woill ask for 2 formns of government ID. You have them. Her passport ios ONE her visa is TWO. Two separate government issued photo IDs.

Go for it, Mountainman...do not let the morons keep you down.

DO NOT let morons interfere with your rights.

I read the guides and we still had a problem - as I outlined above. I think (as I said above) it depends on where you are in the process. Also, what name does she want on her SS card.

th eVJ guides are worng on this matter...overly conservative, actually. Gte the card in her maiden name, no matter whwere you are in the process. Change it after she has the EAD or Green card

I think the wait period the OP was told about is the length of time it takes to make a manual security check. I don't remember why, but even the supervisor I asked for wouldn't budge on it, saying that it is a problem at Homeland Security, and not their own system.

I also strongly disagree about getting a SSN with her maiden name just because you can. I think you said that Alla never intended to change her last name - so it made perfect sense for you two to do that. My wife didn't want to work right away, so there was no need. In fact, were it not for the need for a SSN to get her license (she had no drivers license in Ukraine), we would have waited for the GC before doing anything. I think that the OPs circumstances should drive that decision.

As Gary said, there is no waiting period for a K-1.

My wife applied for her SSN on January 5 (her POE was December 29, marriage December 31).

She applied with her married name, giving them a copy of the K-1 and the marriage certificate.

There IS a waiting period for them getting good and ready to mail it out to you.

We are approaching mid-March and still no sign of it.

Apparently even SHE can't inquire about the status of HER card over the phone.

They only accept in-person appearances. What a backward sorry lot!

She can't easily visit their office so we will have to go together at the next opportunity.

Sorry, we inquired a bunch by phone - and spoke with supervisors that way too.

I suffered that kind case either. They are always saying that they will verify with immigration for status until reaching the expire date of I-94. If you reach that date, they will send the letter stating they can't issue SSN card because the I-94 is expiring and need to give them the adjusting status after getting the documents issued from DHS.

Most of us is suffered.
