Discussed this issue with my then wife to be before coming over, to get an international drivers' license. She did and my insurance company honored it. They even lowered my rates after I married her, probably figured she would keep me home and away from the bars. Took about seven months for her to get an EAD, really great service from the USCIS where she could finally get an SS card that was the requirement for getting a drivers' license in Wisconsin. But we sure had problems renewing it, only issued her a probationary three year license when we went in with an expired green card and what in the hell is a one year extension notice.

Got on the horn with our governors office and after about a week of training our newly appointed state immigration officer that didn't know ####### about immigration, she got her standard eight year license. We also got a letter of apology from the head of our DMV.

Wife did have problems passing her state drivers' test, she is strictly a five speed manual transmission gal, her examiner didn't like her removing her right hand from the steering wheel to shift gears, guess he never saw a manual transmission before. So I purchased a nice used car with an automatic for her, then she finally passed the test with some training not to remove her hands from the steering wheel. Also had to train her to use hand over hand steering on making a turn, not easy when all these newer rack and pinion power steering only go 1.8 turns from lock to lock, but a good thing she has small hands when you only have to turn the wheel about 20* to make a turn.

Not even sure why the DMV issues a drivers' license, issued a license to a kid that practically killed me because he had mental problems, can't sue them, they are not liable, but his insurance company sure was. So if they are not liable, why are they issuing drivers' licenses?

My husband had a German DL but had to take the written and driving tests here in TX. No problem. Was kind of dumb though, considering how much more difficult it is to get a license in Germany. wink.gif

This is what I heard. My brother-in-law's dad has had many exchange students over the years and the students from Germany always got their DL in the U.S. and then "transferred" it to Germany when they returned home after their year in the U.S.

My husband knew how to drive but did not have a DL.

He quickly learned the rules, studied for the computer test, and passed his driving test no problem.
