A Recap and Analysis On Wal-Mart “Raids”

I received a text message from an out-of-state friend on March 8. The text message said, “WALMART dio autorizacion para atrapar imigrantes (sic) dentro de la tienda empieza 20 de marzo apoya el movimiento hispano no comprando en walmar (sic).”

I took it as a hoax for many reasons that many of my activist colleagues did as well. Wal-Mart is a sick company, but they wouldn’t be dumb enough to hurt their own profits. ICE doesn’t need permission to conduct raids. The text technically makes no mention of ICE or deportations, but the implication is clear.

I really just did not pay much attention to it. I put out a post on facebook to see if anyone else had received this text. I got information from many friends (on and off facebook) that they had spoken to people who had seen ICE, in one way or another, at various Wal-Mart locations throughout the Houston area.

As much as I tried, I could not find an eye witness to the activity. I went to one of the Wal-Marts in question, and I could find no first-hand accounts, but myriad second and third hand accounts y un monton de gente que ya habian oido de las supuestas redadas el dia 20 de marzo.

The closest that I got to eye-witness accounts was an account from a Wal-Mart employee who says their personnel department did confirm that they authorize ICE to “check papers.” It’s kind of a vague statement, but after speaking to some respected organizers, I believe that the personnel employee might have been referring to the sharing of paperwork with ICE, not ICE checking workers directly for documentation.

The friend and my wife noted that not to many "Hispanics" were shopping there yesterday as a result. Nobody showed up from ICE either.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement or I.C.E. officials in California said they too had heard the rumors were spreading in various states. Virginia Kice, Western Regional Communications Director released the following statement:

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does not comment on its future operations. However, contrary to the reported rumors, ICE has no agreement with Wal-Mart regarding worksite enforcement operations. We are focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that places priority first on those dangerous criminal aliens who present the greatest risk to security of our communities, not sweeps or raids to target undocumented immigrants indiscriminately.”

I expect it's deliberately malicious. Look what impression has been created with this post, you, your wife and friend are speculating on the legality of the 'hispanic' people who didn't turn up to the shops yesterday. If that's not histeria, I am not sure what is.

You haven't been to Texas and Southern California have you?

I think we should do more to 'scare' the illegal hispanic population. (those here legally have nothing to worry about).

A LOT!!! Thanks to people like yourself.

1) Detained by cops/border patrol and asked for proof of my immigration status while my white-looking Hispanic friend was not questioned.

2) Being accused by a fellow student for getting scholarships because I am a "minority" and not because I busted my #### in college.

3) Getting pulled over by a cop in a small-town Texas and have the VIN number checked on my car because, according to the cop "..it seems unlikely that a person like you can own a BMW"

P.S: I am not Hispanic.... I just look like one!

Either way though, border patrol should question everyone who's entering equally unless there is not proper identification present.

If you're in this country illegally, you are a criminal. Plain and simple.

I just said the problem is with the illegals and with the laws regarding certain situations.

It's not bigotry for most as much as it is frustration.

Of course, you didn't read my comments about equal questioning across the board or how the cop should be fired. No you just chose to pay attention the comments I said about who's to blame for the problems/supposed bigotry out there.

What's the worry?

People who automatically assume you're illegal because you're hispanic or hispanic-looking, or just use the illegal excuse to treat you like less of a human being. It's called prejudice and it's not right.

Just because someone is an illegal also doesn't give anyone the right to treat them like an animal or call them "trash." Do you believe in human rights? or karma for that matter?

And FYI hispanic DOES NOT equal illegal. I know tons of hispanic people who are and have always been legal in this country. Part of them are my family from Puerto Rico, part of the US. A heck of a lot of them don't even speak Spanish anymore. Do you think this stops people like you from scapegoating them? Hell no, it does not.
