We went to the local office the first week of January armed with all the items listed here in VJ. They knew the law about K1 and social security so no problem there. She enters the info into the computer and chats as she goes through the screen and then disaster. Sorry Sir but your name in "the" database doesn't match the name on your documents. We can't issue you a number until you get it corrected

So we drive over to the local Immigration office and schedule an info pass appointment. Go to the info pass the following week appointment and they look in "all" of their databases and the name is correct. So armed with a sheet from them we return to the SS office. This time we get a man who takes the form from visit one and starts looking in his computer. He gets past screen 1 and then screen 2 and tells us it looks fine and all he has to do is submit it. Up comes the dreaded name mismatch. This time copies are made of the passport, K1 screen and I -94 and we are given a form that says the data will be manually verified and we should here within a month.

The month passes and we return to the office and get a third person who looks and says that no number has been issued and tried a 3rd time to enter the data. Up comes the dreaded name mismatch. Once again copies are made and we are sent off. I search online and find an email for SAVE-HELP so I send an email and get a canned answer that they will look at my issue and get back to me in 2 days. I wait a week and still no response. So I find the DHS complaint email and send an email to them, resend the email to SAVE-HELP and one to my congressman for good measure.

I get the same standard email from SAVE-HELP and then another email stating that we need to appear at deffered inspections. So once again I hit the net and find contact info but no hours. I call the number and they tell me NO I am not to show up there. I need to go to social security and have them call at the number I have and they will walk the office through the problems. We have now gone from 10 days after entering the US to 14 days left on the I -94. I am working so my husband goes down alone and gets a 4th agent but this time no dreaded name mismatch, we should have the card in 10 days.

I guess being persistent pays off

The is a good example of the reason a K-1 should apply as soon as possible, since you never know how long the status verification may take.

I wonder what the reason was for the name mismatch, since there are a few mismatches that can be over looked. One being when just one letter of your name is incorrect, for example, Bob Smith would be concidered verified if it came up as Bod Smith in SAVE. If you apply with your married name and SAVE verifies your maiden name and the name change occured after the immigration document was issued that would be OK.

The second letter of the last name is a w and was in Save a ii . Everything , passport, K1, I 94 were very clear that is was spelled correctly. From what we gather there are 3 verification screens and the first 2 they can actually pass through but the finial screen is edited and MUST match. Murphy's law at it's best. I am lucky that all the offices are very close to home and Joseph loves an excuse to go exploring. He is the immigrant so there was no name change issue.
