China to build high-speed rail link to Europe

Damn shame the 'government apparently cannot do anything competently' right? Ironically the federal government too might I add.

Do you think there will be a time when Libertarians and the Tea-party will realize how absolutely wrong their way of thinking is regarding role of government? The Government funds and tenders such projects, the private sector bids and builds - in many cases using a joint venture. Not rocket science. After all, even the communist Chinese get it.

China to build high-speed rail link to Europe

THE journey from London to Beijing by rail could take just two days under a Chinese plan to build an international network for trains that can travel almost as fast as aircraft.

Three networks are planned, with the Britain to China route to be extended to Singapore, and built within a decade.

Passengers on a second route would travel to the north of China and through Russia and on to Germany, where the network would join the European railway system.

A third network would extend south through Vietnam, Thailand, Burma and Malaysia, the London newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports. The trains are expected to travel at more than 320 km/h.

''We are aiming for the trains to run almost as fast as aeroplanes,'' a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering said.

Last year China unveiled the world's fastest train, the Harmony Express, which can reach 350 km/h.

A very thin social safety net does didn't drag down the government's coffers but they will.

BEIJING — China's top lawmaker said Tuesday that legislative priorities this year would be to improve social security and promote more equitable economic development, but he rejected calls to open up the political system.

Uneven economic growth, skyrocketing home prices, limited and expensive medical care, and sparse pension plans have raised huge concerns in China about social stability and provoked widespread discontent.

The law broadly aims to establish a safety net of pension, health care and unemployment benefits, provide free primary and secondary education, and assist the migration of rural residents to cities.

Wu gave no details of the law, but the changes are believed to include more support for lower-income Chinese, many who have been left behind by China's rapid economic growth over the last three decades.

China's rulers are also pouring money into rural areas. The urban-rural wealth gap has widened in recent years and countryside residents earn incomes that are on average just one-third of urban ones. Schools, hospitals, recreational facilities and government services lag far behind those in the cities.

If the Chinese make it, it will probably be made of hazardous materials and derail at high speed.

China already proved themselves by building the Qingzang railway from China to Tibet, the world's highest rail track & the world's longest high altitude train, spanning over 2500 miles, equipped with oxygen supply!

I have confidence if anyone can do it, it's China.

Not going to happen.

Last time I checked, China didn't share a border with Europe, so any such

"high-speed rail link" would have to run through Russia and/or Kazakhstan

and/or a number of unstable Muslim states.

The Russian factor alone would spell doom to their plans.

As the resident bearer of bad news (aka reality) there are a hell of a lot of democracies and capitalist countries that have similar large scale investment projects in the works. It's just the tea-party goes and Libertarians who refuse to accept both the necessity as well as the long-term benefits of such projects. One of those being the experience and knowledge gained from it.

Heck, had the US had this tea-party / libertarian mindset between WWII and the 60's, you would never have gone to the moon, never developed rockets, and would not even have nuclear power. They're just the projects off the top of my head. Projects that still contribute to the country this very day, in various ways.

Well it could happen. Then again, monkeys might fly out of BY's aѕѕ.

What's going to be really embarrassing is when AUS starts building a high speed network themselves.

Edit: Though, I do laugh at your vain attempt to downplay the success and progress of others. You always try to find the weak spot, almost as if it changes reality or something. Unfortunately it doesn't, it simply makes you look like a sore loser.

Obama current plans only invested 14% of the stimulus funds into transporation infrastructure. Most free market people expect the government to build and maintain roads. U.S. passenger rail peaked in 1948 which was long before the tea parties so you'd better rethink who to blame on this one.

Note that a lot of the anti-NASA types were liberals who complained we needed to spend the money on Earth instead of blowing money on space race with the Soviets. Nuclear power was an outgrowth of WWII defense spending which even libertarians wouldn't object to and the bulk of opposition to nuclear has been on the left in this country. Pick some better examples as the ones on the top of your head aren't compelling.

Unlike Bush who invested hundreds of billions into America. America was going places under his watch - yeah the poor house.

Don't even mention the roads here. They're a national disgrace.

I see, so tea-party goers and libertarians like spending money on NASA, just not on anything else; excluding the military of course. Nuclear power and the defense department relies on this thing called science and engineering. Furthermore, it was not some gun-toting fool that is developing the technology or who figured out nuclear power. Guess which party is cutting back from schools and education? I see it first hand in my state, so you cannot BS your way out of this one. Nevertheless, clearly you guys don't mind spending $1.1 trillion per year on defense but have a huge problem with investing money in America on Americans.
