So I'm thinking of applying to a position here. But I haven't been since I was 14 or so and I'd like to know if its a good place to live.

Basically my hours have been shaky for a year so I've started the job hunt before anything bad happens. Despite living in SF I'm actually a midwesterner so the west coast - midwest transition is a non issue.

It's pretty decent.

Cold as hell and too much snow during the winter, but a good place to call home and plenty to do (like drink beer and ice fish.. what else could you want though?)

Twins have a new ballpark.

Vikings are getting a new stadium.

Minnesota Wild are fun to watch in the Xcel Energy Center

The Target Center gets great concerts (ignore the Timberwolves)

Minnesota health insurance laws and mandates are good. Medica is an awesome insurance company..

Yeah, decent place to live, if you can tolerate the cold....

I'm not a fan of the politics up there and they aren't friendly to small business with one of the highest tax rates in the country/world... but what can ya do...

of course it is.... -40 degrees in the winter keeps the riff-raff out

The problem with it as I see is it has a Vermont climate but no mountains to go skiing. But, yeah, no one is living under bridges in either place.

Other than the cold winters, its a decent place to live. Around Minneapolis, winter temps generally stay above zero, but sometimes wind chill can send it lower.

As far as anything else, it depends what you are looking for in a city.

They are? When did that happen?

Well, it's either that or The Vikings will be taken out of Minnesota....

The Metrodome lease is up in 2011 and they've been fighting... We'll see what happens. The blowback in December really pissed them off.

The Vikings wanting or DEMANDING a new stadium is quite different than they are getting one because right now there is no such approved plan nor is there even a legislator willing to introduce such a bill in the capital

YMMV

Then say bye to the Vikings. Many cities would be glad to build them a stadium and give sweetheart deals to them to move.

I'll gladly trade places with you

In general, the twin cities aren't bad. We have excellent public radio, lots of diversity (for the midwest), lots of great restaurants, pretty decent public transportation and housing costs have gone down considerably in recent years.

Our sales taxes are pretty high from paying for all the stadiums that are now charging ticket prices that are too high for me to attend. Booo. I tried to get Badgers/Gophers football tickets last year, and they were $200  You would think since I helped pay for the stadium, I should get to actually afford to get inside.

Right now, it's hovering just above freezing and it's raining. And it's going to rain all week. Bah.

Yeah, I hated taxes there.

State income tax, then a ridiculous sales tax as well.... No tax on clothes mind you, but if you don't shop often.. not worth it.

Minnesota didn't meet a tax they didn't like that's for sure.

I like the residential city streets that are in alphabetical order, si man. However:

Q: Why doesn't Iowa slide into Missouri?

A: Because Minnesota sucks, si man. :)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
