Hello Canadians... I really need your help and assistance with this matter...

I moved to the US on Dec 28th, using my K-1 visa, we just sent in our AOS package the other day. Now comes the problem, I am experiencing severe pain in my knee. I had surgery on it 5 years back, but am having problems now. I was told to go see a doctor but without insurance I am scared at how much it will cost me :( I was looking into getting health insurance, is it true Canadians have to wait 6 months before we can get health insurance? Does anyone know what I should do? Anyone know how much it would cost to go see a knee doctor? Has anyone gone back to Canada after they entered the US to see a doctor?

Please help... I am in pain and don't know what to do :(

AOS/EAD/I-131:

NOA'S Received: March 19, 2010

RFE: March 25, 2010

Case transferred to CSC: April 19, 2010

Does your husband have any insurance? I know once my fiance and I marry I become immediately covered through his work. If he has insurance he should be able to add you as marriage, having a baby etc is considered a 'life altering event' in which his plan can be changed to include you. I wouldn't suggest coming back to Canada for healthcare at this point because you've lost your residency status now and would have to be here 3 months before you'd even be eligible for healthcare again. If you leave before you get your AP you're totally screwed and it just wouldn't be worth it.

My husband got something called "inbound immigrant insurance" from a company called Seven Corners to cover the gap between crossing the border and getting married. You can basically sign up on line and be covered instantly. How exactly it would work if you need to make a claim, I'm not sure (he did not---as I said, it was a gap-filler), but they are very good at answering whatever questions you might have.

Give me a few minutes to google it and I will provide a link.

Where did you hear Cdns had to wait 6 months? Theoretically you should have been looking into something once you arrived here and were done with Cdn health Ins. Since your husband doesn't have any through work, that must be tough. You should be looking into private coverage of some kind for sure.

You could also look into some of the low cost clinics around. Ask at the hospital if they have a listing - go on line and look. Sometimes drugstores like CVS have low cost health clinics. You may be able to consult with someone there about a low cost option to have your knee looked at - and they may be able to give you an idea of the price. The doctor you see may also be able/willing to work out some sort of a payment plan as well. You really do need to have your knee looked at. Good luck

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Most traditional US health insurance companies want you to be a US resident for 6 months before they will cover you. Hence why we need to look for immigrant health insurance. I also used to have Seven Corners.

I would have joined my wife's plan through her job. But to add me would have cost $725/month extra. I passed on the offer and bought my own instead.
