Ok I have yet another question, (thought I had it all figured out) I was reading somewhere on here that they said to get car insurance when I get over, to inform my car insurance company. My question is can I get car insurance on a cdn car because I was told that I can not register this vehicle until my AOS is approved. I can not get my driver's lic changed over until my AOS is approved. So I am not sure what to do?

I don't think residency status matters necessarily ( I could be wrong).

They should insure you, but expect it to be more expensive probably.

Most insurance companies require proof of prior insurance up to the day you buy their policy (and not sure if Canadian insurance will count).

Also they require to pull your credit report most of the time (which will be irrelevant in the US right now for you)

I don't think you'll have a problem finding coverage, but it's the price of coverage that you may not like.

It might be easier to have your spouse/partner do the insurance and add you on as a driver. Might be cheaper that way depending.

I'm sure others who have gone through this can answer a bit better though.

I got insurance with allstate when I brought my car to america. The cost of my insurance is lower than it was in canada even with converting the $ amount. They did no credit check and no background check, they didnt even ask me for a " letter of good faith " that you can get from your car insurance company stating that you havent had accidents and have a clean record with them etc. All they asked for was my SSN.

Thats just my experience tho, and not sure what state your going to, that makes a difference in a lot of things.

Got my DL changed from canadian to american also, all this well before I even started my AOS. And I submitted copys of my insurance, my car title and my DL for proof with the AOS packet.

GEICO insured my Canadian-registered car with my Canadian driver's license no problem at all. They didn't require a credit report. All they wanted was the VIN, plate #, and Canadian driver's license #. This was long before I had AOS'd. They told me to let them know the change of information once I'd registered the car in the US and had a US driver's license. It was probably the easiest process of the whole immigration procedure.

that would be really nice if something went smooth in this bumpy process.

thank you for the information I am going to have my fiancee look into his car insurance and see what they will charge or if they will even do that.
