I also hope Detroit and the other rust belt cities recover. I think they can but they need to make changes and learn to compete again. I also agree we should look more inward at ourselves in this country. The rest of the world does not need us to tell them what to do but we can be here for any other country to ask us for advice and be friends.

Actually I drive a Volvo right now. It is a company truck and I really wouldn't mind going back to freighliner truck. They are all made here by the way as the rest of the world does not want these type of trucks.

Luckytxn -- do you realize how nice it is to talk to you like this, like two normal decent civilized human beings?

When you stop labeling us Democrats "Socialists" and calling us names, we can actually have a nice conversation.

I remember when it was Pete's, KW's, Freightliners, Internationals, etc.

So what, they're still from the UK.

Toyota borrowed plenty of automotive ideas from Henry Ford and the American auto industry. Go buy yourself an American-inspired Toyota.

Japan also took an idea from an American and incorporated it into their manufacturing process that enabled them to surpass everyone. It was called total quality. The professor tried to champion the idea here in the states as he was American but nobody listened to him. The Japanese did and even invited him over to teach them. He did and they ate our lunch. We finally woke up and started the process and now there is an award named after that professor for the companies that best encompass it every year. It is called the Deming award. Japan also seems to have lost their way lately in this regard.

Yes they all compete and most are now owned by each other. Crazy. Volvos used to be a piece of junk but their quality is now near the top.

Macks are still around but the don't make over the road trucks but mid sized heavy and local sized lighter big trucks. Trust me that being built like a mack truck does not mean what it once did.

The Zero fighter plane design also borrowed considerably from American aviation technology of the 30s.

The Japanese built it for long range flying over the vast Pacific, knowing they would be fighting an oceanic war.

They dumped the excess weight of bulky defensive bulkheads and cockpit enclosures which the Mustang had, and got a more maneuverable plane with longer ranges. Smart cookies, those Japs of old. We beat 'em anyway!

In my area Mack's were popular 10 wheelers and tri-axles for hauling gravel and asphalt. Also Autocar and Western Star. I do see a lot of Volvo's now.

The Japanese has copied everything and has never introduced an original idea to the world. They just happened to be industrious and smart enough to notice an idea and incorporate into their processes.

The Chinese are doing the same thing right now. All they are doing is copying everything and not introducing anything original but they are not doing the quality thing. This is their Achilles heel. They make a lot of things cheaply but they are #######.

Macks are excellent for shorter hauls but I have to have what is called a condo big truck and live in it. Macks you can't do that. Western stars are made in Canada and are very good trucks but cost one third more so most can't buy them. Autocar bit the dust ages ago.

Untrue. They have developed many processes which are today used in plants across the world. Their focus on defect reduction was hugely innovative at one point in time.

It's easy for those of us who don't live in Detroit (or similar cities - think of Cleveland or Newark for example) to joke about it.

Newark is not similar. There are no part of Newark where turning them into fields is even being discussed. Yes, blight is being torn down but this is still Jersey. We build here.

Newark has a progressive and very cool mayor. Cory Booker was profiled recently on NBC News with Brian Williams. He comes across as very down to earth, very in touch. He could have gone to Wall St. and made a mint, but he chose to stay in Newark and rebuild the city, one block at a time.

Detroit is hopeless.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

This is what government does best. Abandon problems. Run from them, bulldoze them under the rug. They are proposing it with the Post Office now. It will happen to GM, it will happen to any government run department or institution (Walter Reed Hospital for example) eventually. Government is simply not a good business manager. Beyond picking up trash, local government has little to hang it's hat on. They rarely fill street potholes very well, that being severl clicks above government's capability.

This iw WHY we cannot allow them to control health care.

I DO NOT CARE what they do in the UK, Australia, Canada. This is not any of those places. Our government has a proven track record of destroying everything they contact at every level. Our government was never set up or intended to operate what should be private business.
