And the profits go home to Japan.

Yes they do as they should. Or should we forbid any profits from leaving the U.S.? Many corporations from other countries have facilities here that provide a lot of jobs and most are not from Japan or Asia. The main idea us working smuck need is jobs so we can make a living. As you can see from the rust belt, when the jobs leave the money and people leave.

What are you, a Communist? Of course the profits go home. That's what globalization means. You know - you're allowed to buy Toyota shares. That way you can have some of those profits sent right back into your Schwab account.

It is ok for all of our profits that U.S. companies make to come home to from all the far flung places we operate in. The only sad thing was Detroit was a leader but are no more. I won't shed a tear though as the they could have avoided this. The writing on the wall was there.

You are correct - the US gains as much (more!) from globalization as it loses. Every time IBM or Boeing or McDonalds makes a sale abroad, the US parent corporation profits. Of course we compete on that global stage, so our markets are open too. The only thing that's unfair is situations like China which have artificial protectionist barriers (the pegged Yuan exchange rate), meaning they're not playing by those open rules.

As to Detroit - it's not just the Big Three. If they go down, think of all the suppliers and dealers across the country. It's untold losses of jobs and livelihoods tied into this ecosystem. It should not be sustained artificially, but if a limited infusion of government help can get them through this rough patch and back to profitability, then I'm in favor of such a bailout. We will see soon enough what we got - a pig in a poke, or a diamond in the rough. I'm hoping for the latter. As an American and a taxpayer, we all should hope for the latter and not be gloating at the demise of Detroit.

I hope Detroit recovers. We should worry about fixing ourselves instead of the rest of the world for a while. Bush started two wars, that money would have made Detroit almost as good as Melbourne.

If I like something from another country then that makes me hate America. Do I hate America because I love my Vietnamese wife?

No, women are different. What kind of rig do you drive?

Last I looked we gain a lot more from Globalization. Yes China is unfair and it will bite them in the rear eventually. Japan used to be the same way and it did them too. There are already moves being made where other countries are being looked at for manufacturing to start being moved to. If China doesn't start seeing the writing on the wall then 5-10 years they may get hurt.

The Stone's music was inspired by black American blues music.

So what, they're still from the UK.

Toyota borrowed plenty of automotive ideas from Henry Ford and the American auto industry. Go buy yourself an American-inspired Toyota.

I also hope Detroit and the other rust belt cities recover. I think they can but they need to make changes and learn to compete again. I also agree we should look more inward at ourselves in this country. The rest of the world does not need us to tell them what to do but we can be here for any other country to ask us for advice and be friends.

Actually I drive a Volvo right now. It is a company truck and I really wouldn't mind going back to freighliner truck. They are all made here by the way as the rest of the world does not want these type of trucks.
