Hey everyone! I have a question about travelling soon after applying for citizenship.

My husband and I have not returned to Brazil since we came back from the K1 interview 3 years ago :( and we're hoping/planning that it be this year. Because of my husband's job, we don't think we'll be able to go before Christmas of this year.

Now my question is: his 90-day window to apply for citizenship opens in October...Could there be a problem with travel if we were to go to Brazil for 1-2 weeks a couple months after sending off the application?

I would say we can just wait to apply 'til we come back from our trip, but because of my job and possibly moving out of the country next summer, I'd like my husband to be a citizen before we leave.

It should not be a problem at all. A short visit like you're talking about won't break continuous residence, and it won't be enough to cause any problems with the physical presence requirement.

We took a week's international vacation after the interview and before the oath ceremony. Of course we disclosed it when we were checking in to the oath ceremony, but otherwise, it was not an issue.

You DO want to make sure that you don't miss the interview, of course (you can reschedule if necessary).

Hi bora bora,

I was reading up on some of the timelines here in VJ, and if things remain at the current speed, most applicants get their interview in 3-4 months, so it could be very tight since your interview could be right around Christmas and the Oath could be on a different day, plus the time it takes for the passport to be issued, so I would suggest you either reschedule to go during spring break or wait and apply after you come back.

Oh no, we'd just apply right before we left. We can only take the trip when my husband has vacation time so that would take priority.

It is nice not to have to apply during a certain time (like removing conditions).

If people are getting approved in 3-4 months (which I noticed but didn't know if it were the "norm") then we can afford to apply right before we leave.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes you can apply before you leave, but remember that his fingerprints will proberly be around 3/4 wks after you apply..

Then after the fingerprints there is a delay on a interveiw letter, after fingerprints, then you will get a interveiw date which runs different times depending on which state and service centre you use....

My Advice is sneak off just after he has his fingerprints done, then the uscis should have everything there they need to move your application Forward...

Please note....make sure somebody can check your post while your on your break as you don't want a RFE or something and you have missed something.

Take a look at some N-400 timelines and this will give you a better idea of when is the best time for your mini break..
