Health insurance is very different for that very reason.

Good call. High deductibles are for people who don't quite get what insurance means.

makes it sound like you believe high deductibles are never appropriate, and are counter to the notion of insurance as pooled risk.

That's simply not true. Even in health insurance, depending upon how it's structured and what the annual out-of-pocket costs are, copays, etc., it may (or may not) make sense to go high or low deductible. The biggest factor probably is whether you are young and healthy and insuring to protect against unlikely catastrophic illness or accident, or are you chronically sick and know in advance that you will have high healthcare expenditures.

This thread is about health insurance.

I usually don't type on message boards with the degree of precision I'd use at work or at school :)

Agreed. Every HD health insurance plan I'm familiar with has a deductible large enough to put a very big dent in your savings. And besides, given that illness can strike suddenly and without warning it makes little sense to presume one is "healthy" just because one is healthy today.

But it's Australia. It must be faster.

I enjoy you guys making it out as if I have stated Australia is the best at everything. Ironically it is you who has created an 'America is the best' thread.

PS Their medical system does outrank America's. Plus they live longer.

Work on those readin' skills.

Eh close enough. Might as well have got it out and worded it that way.

You're projecting.

I discuss specific areas that they are leading in - which usually means better in. You will never hear me make some broad brushed generic best in the world statement. Anyways, we all know Americans are infamous for that, probably even trademarked it.

As I have also said before, I refer to them because I know them best. I could, for example, mention France's health care as being the leader but while true, I don't know much about it. Call me old fashion but quality of life and standard of living is a pretty important ranking for me, and probably most other people. This whole I am trying to convince VJ or better yet telling people to move is dead wrong and absolutely ridiculous. I know more than enough people in person here (Americans) who praise Australia more than I do. However, many of them have either traveled there, with others keen on me hooking them up with work once I move back. Horses for courses..

The America Appreciation Thread was not started with the intent of it being a "best in the world statement" either.
