Thanks Minnew. Hmm might hard to get money back and forth from a Canadian institution after immigration.. Wonder if EI may be best sent via cheque to the US address? I like direct deposit best but I think it might pose a challenge to have this deposited to a Canadian bank then having it wired to me in the USA.

You won't find anywhere to cash the check in Cdn funds down here, American banks cannot do it quickly and even if they can, you'll be charged a massive fee.

TD bank account debit cards can be used at a variety of places in the US...Target is one...you can take cash out when you're paying

Wiz(USC) and Udella(Cdn & USC!)

If you still have a Canadian bank account open, then you only need to know one web site for transferring money to an American account:

http://www.customhouse.ca

A lot of people in the Canada subforum here use it and recommend it. I've used it extensively. Just like Paypal, but with much better rates, and amazing customer service.

I use customhouse too, it's free as long as you use their EFT service. They do wire as well but it costs $$. The only downfall to EFT is that it takes about 5 business days to process to get to your bank account in the US. Once I start working though in the US it will be the other way around I will be sending $$ to Canada for my student loan & gmac loan.

The rates are amazing much better than the bank!
