We appreciate you, and hope you have the best IWD ever.

We? Got a mouse in your pocket?

Considering that highly feminist and pro woman USA does not acknowledge this day says something. Paradoxically, Russia and the Ukraine, famously male oriented and chauvinistic countries celebrate it. Life is truly a puzzle.

A little background:

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it came to commemorate the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions.

In 1910 the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen (in the labour-movement building located at Jagtvej 69, which until recently housed Ungdomshuset) by the Second International and an 'International Women's Day' was established, which was submitted by the important German Socialist Clara Zetkin, although no date was specified.[1] The following year, 1911, IWD was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, on March 19.[2] However, soon thereafter, on March 25, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City killed over 140 garment workers. A lack of safety measures was blamed for the high death toll. Furthermore, on the eve of World War I, women across Europe held peace rallies on 8 March 1913. In the West, International Women's Day was commemorated during the 1910s and 1920s, but dwindled. It was revived by the rise of feminism in the 1960s.

Demonstrations marking International Women's Day in Russia proved to be the first stage of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Following the October Revolution, the Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make it an official holiday in the Soviet Union, and it was established, but was a working day until 1965. On May 8, 1965 by the decree of the USSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet International Women's Day was declared as a non working day in the USSR "in commemoration of the outstanding merits of Soviet women in communistic construction, in the defense of their Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War, in their heroism and selflessness at the front and in the rear, and also marking the great contribution of women to strengthening friendship between peoples, and the struggle for peace. But still, women's day must be celebrated as are other holidays."

I'll cite your copy/paste source for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women's_Day

Also, is Wikipedia now an approved RUB source? I ask because:

Mox, I'd hate to hang my hat on Wikipedia being fair and accurate. It's not to be fully trusted or seen as a fountain of truth. It's just a quick and dirty source for some loose snap shot of something or somebody. It's a lazy man's resource.

Also, this from your Wikipedia citation:

In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day.

Just curious, do you celebrate Christmas on December 25th? You do realize that Christmas used to be a pagan holiday, don't you? Same with Easter. Do you send your mother a card or call her on Mother's Day? You do realize that the "Mother's Day Proclomation," which was pretty much the first time Mother's Day was celebrated in the US, was actually a call to pacificsm, don't you? Or that patriotic celebration, "President's Day?" It's actually no longer a celebration of Washingtons birthday, was never a celebration of Lincoln's birthday, and in fact will never legislatively fall on Washington's birthday ever again.

The point about holidays is what you make of them, not their history. You want to ignore your wife on this day, go right ahead. But why rain on everybody else's parade?

Mox, I know you'd never knock wiki as you use it frequently...but if you have a better source, please share it. BTW, nice research in pulling up my old posts...I'm flattered.

My mom is dead.

I rather like pagan celebrations.I understand most Christian holidays are aligned with the earlier pagan ones.

Yes, dates are arbitrary. So what? IWD has moved around a lot.

I don't like the all inclusive "We" in comments. That draws me into the conversation involuntarily. Kind of like communism.

But seriously, Brad started the thread to honor IWD. You choose not to partake, you've said so many times, thus providing the "balance" you've sought to provide. So now that you've had your say, let the rest of us enjoy please.

Back on topic: nothing big planned for us. Flowers, chocolates, me making dinner, and the rest is nobody else's business. ;)

Nope. Just happy to see you.

Thank you Brad! :star:

You are most welcome. You should post more here, we need more opinions from "the girls".

VV, lots of us don't like some of your comments. You obviously couldn't care less about that, so it's really pointless to explain how you don't really like my use of we in a sentence. We don't care.

I went the spa route, with dinner out (mostly so I don't have to cook). And yes, there were FLOWERS.

If I make comments you don't like, I try to take ownership of them by using "I statements." That way I don't presume to speak for all men. Other than that, speak your mind...or heart.

And if this day represents an authentically important day for you...enjoy. If you're just playing it up for your wife, then I see you're a good American husband who knows how to play the game. Not noble, but practical.

Well, since you're on a crusade, here's another IWD thread which uses the term "we".

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=245724

Go getum. You've got a long day ahead of you, since I imagine we'll be seeing more of these threads.

Or you could just leave this thread alone and start up a different thread if you want to have more conflicts with people.

This isn't one of those threads however.

My god you're petty.

A quick search of your posts reveal that you occasionally interject "we" into your posts also. As in "mox, we don't need your lecturing blah blah blah." Brad was expressing a sentiment that only you seem to have an objection to. As I said before, your indignation and "balanced" view point is duly noted, so all you're really doing now is playing the spoiler. Why not start your own thread about how teh stoopid IWD is? Wouldn't that be more respectful than trashing Brad's thread?

I don't mind being held to account if I misuse the term, "We." Please feel free to call me on it when it happens. Two wrongs don't make a right.

And, tell me, are you now Brad's spokesman?
